So i bricked my m860tu when i was doing a bios flash. It wont power up so im guessing i need a new bios chip. Any idea how much it would cost to get it replaced or is there a way to program the chip another way.

Couple of things, first describe in more detail how you flashed your Bios. I am curious of what you did. Have you unplugged the AC adapter and removed the battery? also hit the power button to bleed of any residual charge that may be in the system.

You could try out the procedure in this link, not sure how well it works or even if it will for Sager/Clevo:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-your-phoenix-bios-bios-recovery-methods.html

If that does not help you may need to send it in for repair.

The EEPROM is not socketed so no easy replacement there... probably a new motherboard.

Check zfactor guide for any software workaround.

Well they probably can reprogram the board through the JTAG connector that is on the motherboards. Sager may charge you for that but it should not be to expensive.
contact your reseller and see what they can do to get you started.

They'll just charge the $480 for a new motherboard.

Protip: ALWAYS FLASH THE EC FIRST

I did flash the ec first and it went completely fine. but kb not so much :p. And Ive flashed it 2 times before and had no problems. The flash went to completion and froze the laptop. had to remove the battery and unplug it just to get it to turn off.

Ya i figured they either programmed the chips initially through some kind of connection or the chips were already programmed. I should ask some electronic engineers i know at my school if they can do it.

I just sent sager a email but i have a feeling its going to be pricey.

    thanks for the info

sending it to them is gonna end up costing like 300+$. I found some places that program bios chips and its fairly cheap. I just dont know if they are legitimate. I found one that will reprogram my old bios chip for $20+ shipping. biosman.com

I'd sooner try to resolder the chip than buy a new motherboard.

Ya thats what i was thinking. And im pretty sure sager cant reprogram the chip because they probably receive the boards with a bios already programmed. At least i have a little experience soldering from screwing up my solder mod the first time :p

Only with a closer look onto the board we could find the EEPROM(wich has the system BIOS and EC code), but it should be near the IT8512E Keyboard/Embedded Controller:

To unsolder the EEPROM just use a heat gun, but be careful cause some(if not all) EEPROM chips have cheap plastic housings that could easily melt.

Alright. I appreciate the help. Now I don't need to google. : p. I may just order a new one because it's like $27 by sending mine in or $40 to get a new one. I just gotta make sure the company is legitimate : p.

The guys over at BIOSMAN have been doing business before I even entered high school. You won't go wrong with them.

I've been wondering about that chip.

Has anyone heard of a way to access or edit its settings?

RW-everything lets you access the EC registers.

And thats pretty much what the IT8512E is, an EC register?

Thats interesting, it would be fun to experiment. Though I probably wouldn't risk it on my clevo. Mainly I was thinking about trying to add different keyboard layouts.

Sorry about the off topic. Hope you get it figured out, mmoerbe

I'm not exactly sure about it. All I know is that with some notebooks you can control the fan through the EC registers, and power for some devices I think.
And I thought the IT8512E was an EC chip.

Though I don't know, can't find the datasheet for it.

When I changed random EC registers with my notebook, got pretty strange results, lcd brightness changed and the notebook thought it was on battery power when plugged in, lots of things went nuts.

I would have thought it would power on even with a bad bios, any chance something else is broken?
