    Hello all,

I was wondering if this is a good all around gaming laptop?
    With these specs:
    Intel® Core™ i7 960 Processor (4x 3.20GHz/8MB L3 Cache)

    6GB [2GB x 3] 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM [Notebook Memory] Corsair or Major Brand

    Mobility DDR3 1GB NVIDIA GTX285 PCI-Express 3D Video [D900F]

320 GB 7200rpm Serial-ATA Super Slim Notebook Hard Drive
and the basic things from IBUYPOWER.
This will cost $2,850. Is it worth it to get it now or wait til I go off to college in 2 years. I will primarily be playing W.o.W, warhammer online, and Crysis along with many other games(still havent decided).

Yeah with that setup you can pretty much max out almost every game.

The desktop CPU won't actually help you much in games. You might try looking for a W870CU/W860CU (ibuypower sells them, but I think they're a little higher priced than you can get elsewhere... try XoticPC, PowerNotebooks, RJTech). It's got the same GPU, same screen size, and the mobile i7 CPUs. Just the 720qm is enough to max out most games, the 820qm is about 10-15% more powerful, but you won't see that increase in most games.

They're also much lighter than the D900F. That thing is a tank. Made out of neutron star.

You could also get the X8100 - it should cost a bit less than the D900F, but it has SLI so you *will* see a modest gaming performance increase.

i agree... gaming is your thing... that x8100 sli is king. if you want the processing power for multitasking and encoding video etc... get the desktop chip

Save some cash and change the 6GB down to 4GB and I also recommend getting a W860CU instead. Also ask yourself if the added weight and heat of an SLI setup is worth the potential 20% performance increase in gaming when with the single GTX285M, you are already getting great performance as well as upgrading to a better single GPU in the future.

He can go to 3GB though. That will still be plenty for gaming and then can upgrade at a later time when he has more money

3GB is far from enough! Seriously dude, what games do you play? :p On a fresh Win7 install I regularly push my 4gig rig when I play Project Reality.. Granted, that game is a memory-hog, but I doubt 3gig would work for much in the next year or so...

ibuypower does not offer that config, nor do alot of other places ive seen, he would have to buy a barebone from rjtech to go with 3gb... and newegg shows a cost savings of roughly 60 bucks.... well worth the upgrade from 3gb to 6gb

Actually, 2GB is plenty enough for almost any game. As long as you're not running CAD, you probably don't need more.
