I am waiting for the new Sager 5796 or 9262 with the 9800m GTX graphics cards in them. The 9262 is better because they will be able to equip dual 9800's whereas the 5796 will only have one.
I will be using the laptop for college and some heavy gaming. I was wondering what battery life I can expect from the 9262 since it does not have a mobile processor and how much more performance can I expect out of the 9262 compared to the 5796 considering they will both have 9800's.
Is it worth it for the heavier/less battery life laptop. (I will be taking it with me a lot of places)

It has about a 1 hour lifespan, MAYBE 1.5 hours if you tried to stretch it. That's what I've read on the forums here, anyway.

The NP9262's battery is much more like a UPS that lasts about an hour. You can try to stretch it to 1.5 hours if you enable a bunch of power saving options. But with a desktop quad core CPU inside, it won't go beyond 1.5 hours.
If you're going for portability but want a powerful machine, the NP9262 is probably not for you. I would recommend the NP5796 since you will be taking the machine around. -
I tested out the battery for the first time...I was only able to get 35 minutes, oh well. The only time I have it on battery is when I'm moving the Np9262 to a different gaming location i.e... dinner table, work table, sofa, patio, etc....

manage to get slightly over an hour while browsing the web and typing out a doccument.. should be able to hit 1.5 hours if you off wi-fi, bluetooth, webcam, etc.. the thing about this is, its the pure performance that rules this notebook.. if you're bringing it around often, and there's a power source to where you're going, get the 9262... unless you really need long battery life.. and as NameInsert said, the 9800GTX would just suck the battery dry, so between these 2, not a big diff in batt life, but a big diff on performance =)

So I was wondering, would it be possible to completely turn off one of the dual graphics cards for more battery life? What about operating on only 2 of the cores of the quad core processor (yeah the question itself even sounds like a stretch, but I figured I'd ask anyway)? Further, can the CPU/GPU combo be "down clocked"? I have an inspiron 9300 right now and have notebook hardware control which allows me to clock the CPU down to 800Mhz when I need battery life. Is there something like this for the 9262?

Because the power regulator on the motherboard is fried and the computer no longer charges the battery. Even if it did, it only lasts about 45 minutes (it's 3 years old). The inspiron is turning into my media center and remote access point when I get the new computer. I plan to keep it permanently connected to my home theatre setup and access it remotely if I need to get anything off my external. The new machine I'm buying is going to be my main machine.

I'm thinking of getting a 9262 also...just have to I think
The battery to me is a UPS device anyway, as I'm always plugged in. I'm trying to figure out what's the best config for this unit to keep it under 2500 samolians?

Try to think of the 9262 as a very mobile desktop with a built in UPS. Mine has lasted about 50 min on battery while surfing wirelessly and screen brightness maxed.

Is there no software that can shut off unused hardware when on battery? Like I said, it would be nice if you could only power one harddrive (if you have a dual boot anyway) and operate on only one GPU. Has anyone looked into this?
-
Well, I have one hdd and one gpu and I get about 1:30 with my laptop on power saver and fully bright. If I have it the brightness down and my wireless off I can maybe stretch it to 1:45. Thats with just taking notes in class.

With the brightness at the lowest levels I can get 1.5 hours on my rig (1 GFX card, 3 HDDs), but the 9262 isn't meant to run off battery power for long.
Battery life on 9262?
