HWmonitor reports my 3 weeks old P150HM to have a 4% battery wear level.
Is that normal? Most of the time, i plug it into the wall leaving my battery in it.
Should I remove the battery while plugged in? Any tips on prolonging the battery?

    Thanks

Dunno if it is normal. I'm on ~10% wear after 15 months.

There is a debate on how to care for your battery. My recommendation would be to read the P150HM User's Guide. There might be a section in there regarding battery care/optimization. There was for my x7200.

In any case, if you want to do some more research :

That amount of wear might be pretty close to normal. Wear calculations are based on the factory specified wattage, but not all batteries come out at that level when manufactured. A difference of a few percent either way is entirely possible even in brand new batteries. I'd take it with a grain of salt because it's software based detection as well. My P150HM that I've been using pretty hard for a year is at 10% as well.

I was also wondering about my battery level. It's already showing an 11% wear level and I've had the computer for less than a month. It's the W150/5165 that I have in my sig. It seemed like a big decrease over such a short time, is it normal?

this argument has gone backwards and forwards for a while now.
people say leaving your battery connected all the time while using mains doesnt harm it.... well bullcrap.
my first battery went down to less than 25% charge within first year.
was replaced under warranty and advised to remove it when using mains for long periods of time. the new battery is now 2.5 years old and still holding 98% charge.

so what level of wear is acceptable? It does seem like every week I've had it, the wear indicator on HWmonitor was gone up a couple points. Right now it says:
    Designed capacity: 62160mWh
    Full Charge capacity: 55511mWh
    Wear Level: 11%

That is high for a month of use, but it would depend on your usage. The battery is warrantied for a year, so I'd say just keep an eye on it. Have you noticed actual shortening of run time, or is it just the value in battery wear that's changed?

I haven't actually timed it out recently. When I first got it, it was within the expected range of time I recall, but it was also at a 1% wear level then. I actually don't rely on the battery too much though because I'm on power supply for most of the day. Whenever I'm going to be attached to the power supply, I usually take the battery out (with ~70% charge) if I'm going to be on it for 3+hrs.
I'll have to see what actual battery life is. I guess if it is a prob and it gets worse, I'll let MALIBAL know. Thanks.

From memory the recommendation is once a month to run your battery down to about 75% and then recharge it.
This way it lasts very long. Have done this process since I received my p170HM and battery wear level is at 0%

I have never bothered to look at battery care instructions, but what I can tell you is that my 3 year old Dell XPS 16, which I have used very heavily (currently its on 24/7 running a specialized server) and almost NEVER taken the battery out, shows 17% wear level.

You can call BS all you want, but that's what I see, and I literally have never taken the battery out. Just my 2 cents.

really odd, battery wear level on HWMonitor just increased to 13% now, I guess at this rate I'll need a new battery pretty soon. I wonder if it's a bad controller or something like that. Is there a way of updating the battery associated drivers?

No, there aren't any drivers for the battery. It's controlled at the hardware level. Before you worry though, try timing it on a run-down cycle. Monitoring software is notoriously poor for giving accurate measurements.

Hmm, my wear level stopped at 2.6%.

Batteries are killed by heat. If you game intensely on battery, or let the battery run hot (i.e. on the bed for a long time while charging the battery), the battery will be subject to wearing.

    No.
I always disconnect psu connector when unit is turned off.
I reconnect it when I start to use the notebook again.

Hmmm... I'm 5 months in on my P170hm and its at 12% wear. Sat on a cooler 80% of the time so it can't be heat. Guess I'll just have to watch it.

    I've had my P150HM for 2 months and have 0% wear :)

Got the battery inserted all the time but rarely use it (got psu plugged in 90-95% of the time)

Im not convinced this advice is right.

I have Sony Vaio Z1 bought in March 2010 and it is always plugged in now for 4.5 years and battery is 17% worn and works well.

I don't use it much on battery but when I do it lasts as long as can be expected on this computer high power usage i7 m620 machine.

My advice is not to worry about it. If your wear rates high then take it up with the manufacturer as it has likely always been bad and therefore a manufacturing fault in the battery.

If the battery is that damaged after a year of being plugged in then there may be an issue with the charging circuit.

You should not worry about HWInfo percent, because it's the inverse of the normal wear indicator. So if you have 12% it means that you have lost 12% of the battery capacity. So the normal battery wear indicator is 100%-12%= 88%, which is still a reasonable value. If you still have doubts download nirsoft app on http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html

Battery wear even on a brand new computers is pretty common. I've done video reviews on many models and all the brands we carry and they have all shown a some battery wear right out of the box.

Just thought I'd chime in here. I've had this system since the summer of 2011 (hard to believe this thing is 4 years old already, still going strong!), and my battery wear is reported as being 18% below maximum capacity. Wear details as follows:

    Designed capacity: 76,960 mWh
    Full charge capacity: 63,699 mWh
    Current capacity: 63,699 mWh

I've literally had this laptop plugged in for 100% of its usage (alright, there are probably 60 minutes of battery usage over that time, excuse my hyperbole ), and I'd say it is left on 80-90% of the time. Needless to say, battery health was and isn't really a concern of mine, as I intended this to be a mobile desktop replacement. That being said, ~4.5% battery wear a year doesn't seem unreasonable.

8 months and 13% is not bad, if you are transporting it a lot then the battery will go through a lot of temperature shifts.
