Pretty much what the title says, best modified forceware driver for gaming performance with a FX3700M installed as a 280M?

I tried the modded driver v259.47 from laptopvideo2go but it just kept locking up my system at random. The verde Quadro drivers from nvidia are okay but they chop my 3DMark06 score by over 700 points and for some reason it limits my choice of resolutions in several games.

Any suggestions, especially from FX3700M owners, are appreciated.

    Hi there.

paralel, and other users who have this card and this barebone, I'm considering in getting the 3700m for my m570ru-u.

Could you post a review of how good that card works with our barebones and all the adversities with gaming and so on with that card? and some benchmarks and stabilites tests and temps? Cause i'm a little afraid if this card is worth it for gaming or not and if i will not spend money for nothing.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my english (should i send you a pm instead of this post? if so, sorry for this :/ )

As with many things, it depends on how much effort you want to put into it.

I have had about 5 of these cards. I had no problems with any of them on an m860etu. Older clevo models however have had some problems.

They don't overclock very well except for some select cards. I have one that I'm using a gtx 280m vbios on and it overclocks very well, but its quite a rarity as I understand. Most of them will not work at all with a 280m vbios.

It is definitely worth it if you are willing to work with all of us with 3700m :) unless you already have a gtx 260 or 9800gtx, we are trying to find better vbioses, drivers, etc and its the only other card with as many pipelines as the 280m.

You were correct in posting instead of PMing. also your english is pretty good.

Thanks for your reply and for your compliments :)

I'm asking this because i asked to a friend of mine that works on the reseller shop of clevo of my country (portugal) about this possible upgrade and he aswered me that it wasn't a good idea to upgrade to this graphics because it wasn't recomended to adapt the cooler of the graphics card, specially in this kind of card, and specially for me, that likes a lot to play games...

Original text, in case of bad translation
"Não é de todo recomendado adaptar o cooler principalmente nesse tipo de gráficas. Sei que gostas de jogar e esta placa não foi construída para essa função e isso também foi dito no fórum."

Thats why i'm asking if this is worth it or not, since the m570ru-u doesn't have a lot of upgrades to choose (none of the gtx 260 and above works well or doesn't work at all in my laptop :\ )

    Thanks again :)

The fx 3700m has the same layout as those other cards.

It may not be "recommend" to adapt the cooler, but you can do it, and you can do a good job and keep it cool.

I'll take some pictures soon, I don't know if you have the same revision. I think others have been in your place and you could find information on adapting the heatsink, but whatever.

As you can see in my sig, I'm successfully using it with my M570RU-U, with both the default Clevo as well as the Sager BIOS. At the clocks in my sig it's rock solid, and the 3DMark06 scores are at those clocks.

Since reading about the .10 vBIOS being better for overclocking I'm thinking about giving that a shot and pushing it even further since I have some thermal overhead.

The 8700 heatsink is actually a fairly good fit for the 3700m, very little needs to be done in order to make it work successfully. I think I actually made a post about that. It might have been a PM. If you can't find the post I'll put up the bit I wrote about making the 8700 heatsink work with the 3700m.

The .10 vbios is just more stable in my experience.

You may want to try adding some voltage if you are not at 1.05v already. You have to change the hex byte to '69'. More info on that at the end of the "260m will break 13.5k" thread

69 is 1.05v and there are others up to 1.16v as moral hazard has discovered... hey, if youve really got the thermal overhead... ;)

Did you see a big change in temps going to 1.05 or was it fairly negligible?

So you had 74c before the cooler (by cooler you're saying an external laptop cooler, not any internal modification, right?) in full load, even with the fans forced to max (with sager kbc bios) or with auto fan control?

Hum... it isn't to high at all (nothing that this baby can't handle) but it isn't to low too, considering that an external cooler isn't an option for me... and in idle, without the cooler, and with auto fan control, what are the temps? And seeing a 720p movie with the the fans set to minimum, what temps did it go? Sorry for all the trouble and work, but i don't want to give a false step with this...

Thanks again for all the replys

    Sorry for bothering again...

That temps are with any kind of overclock with the graphics card or with the default clocks? just run a stress test with my 8700m gt overclocked and the max temp was 72c, so that temperature you achieve is even more "normal" that i had thought :)

About the 720p movie test, just compare the temps that it as achieved while browsing or something not to heavy while with the fans in the minimum setting, just to have an idea of how much it gets hot in all possible ways ,just to cover everything . My 8700m gt with the default clocks and watching videos or browsing the max that it got was 64c (after watching a movie in 720p for about 3 hours straight) and the average is 53/55c.

    Thank you

Those are the temps with the card OCed to 600/1495/910. I don't remember any of the temps for the base clocks. If you look through my posting history you might find info for the base clocks.

Im one of those with an unlucky card, bought from niffcreature :)
I dont know if i am happy or not with it,i was expecting a huge performance boost in games than my superoced 9800m gt but those are marginal.
The card seems stable at 560/1450/900,it passed a vantage and 3dmark06 with 575/1450/900 but the video driver crashes after a minute playing Dirt and Blur.

I still need to benchmark it thouroghly compared to 9800m gt, maybe tonight ill stick back it in and try it.

Btw im using v10 hp bios, overvolted to 1.05 with cpu @ 3,60ghz for all my test (v1.2850). Still it peaks 81c under gaming.

can't decide if its worth giving up sli 8800m gtx's for a single fx 3700m, don't care much for messing around with sli drivers.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you, I have a single 9800gt and I was debating whether it was worth it to get another one to go sli or just to buy the fx 3700m. I'm thinking of just going with the 3700m because I have a lower res screen anyway, so I'm not sure how beneficial sli will be for me.

I swear we are going to get a 280m bios for it...

Truthfully they are not much better than a 9800 gtx or 260m. Kingpinzero did not get an unlucky card, me and paralel got very lucky ones.

Mine was less lucky because I bought 4 and it was just 1 of them.

Maybe you guys should make people offers for their .10 bios version cards in the 8730w owners lounge. I believe they are a different revision that are better and support the 280m bios.

Yah just sucks that it takes forever sometimes for sli to be supported fully. Actually almost all the games I play support it but ffxiv performance sucks big time with slightly enabled. Actually have to turn it off for it to work right.

Im using latest beta 260.63 but modified as gtx 280m in order to use game profiles with Nvidia Inspector.
Those drivers are the best for me, i get better benchmarks than 258.96 or others.
Theres no point to roll back to 185.20 or 185.85 as those drivers arent optimized at all with newer games; yes you can get higher benchmark scores but they crap out with newer games.

Anyway installing it as GTX 280m OR Fx 3700m using 260.63 betas doesnt change much, they still performs the same.

Also note that althought you install the card as gtx 280m, it will "partially" installed as it, because still the physical card is still seen as FX 3700m.

No i didnt meant unlucky as an ugly non working card. The only problem i have so far is that i cant go high on core clock without crashing the driver under 3dmark06 and some games.

At 560 is stable; the strange thing is that with .10 bios i can play hours with games using 560/1450/900.

Dunno whats happening on the core, neither the temperature is the culprit, at max i can reach with 3,6ghz is a mere 81°.

Try a volt mod, give it 1.06v or more.
    81C is kind of high.

When I had a 9800m, when I had it under 70C it would overclock better.

Any luck about 1.06v? So far mine is running with 1.05v thanks to Niff trick (hex 67 to 69?).

How do i bring it further?

81c is not that higher MH, consider my cpu is running at 3,6 daily and it reaches 80 as well. m860tu doesnt have any separate cooling systems, its one heatsink for both gpu and cpu with a small fan :)

Well i took the risk and tried to overvolt the .10 bios.

Just hex edit the 67 value to 71, it will bring it to 1,16v.

    Well,guess what? Nothing changes lol.

Still CTD at 580 with 3dmark06.
So now im pretty sure that something is mechanically different with my card compared to an hp one, like thw one niff have.

No much to do with this lappy..im going to revert to v1.03 for stability.
Now i have to confirm if my m860tu will accept quads and maybe ill get a gtx 280m, hopefully ill get better results.

Or ill sell this one and get an m1730 with an 8800m gtx in sli.

I've just modded the .10 version of the vBIOS to 1.06v (and modded the vid table to reflect the change) then flashed it.
I was able to run furmark @ 600/950/1500 (didn't try any higher yet) and I've attached my result.

Can anyone else run the same test to compare the results with?

I chose 1.06v because that's what highest available value on my 9800m GS vBIOS was.

I might try 1.16v a bit later, my cooling is still pretty bad even with a custom cooler.

There you go, note that this is WITH NO AA.
Ill try to see if i can post some with AA, but my video driver keeps crashing....god this card is so unlucky.
Also i benched with cpu at default speed, 3.06ghz.
Look at the score and try with no AA, to see how much you gained.
Using your bios with clocks in the image.

Theres the newer one, with 8x AA enabled.
Same clocks as above and cpu speed.
I forgot to tell you that im using a 4 minutes test instead of 1 (60ms) to test the stability more longer.
Gpu peaked 96-98% all the time.
But i bet my PSP collection that i would not go in a game without having a crash in 20 seconds.
    Pic attached.

Thanks, I'll run the test again with my CPU at the same speed in the morning.

I'll try some real testing of my overclock also, might be stable with furmark, but I didn't try 3dmark or any games yet.

I dunno what you did there, MH, but something's magic about that bios you posted.

    Check the pic attached.
I succesfully ran a 3dmark06 full run a bunch of times, this time with these clocks: 575/1450/900 @ 3,6ghz.

Also i ran some more furmark, 4 minutes, as posted above. Peaked 80c.

But maybe i understand whats different this time; the VID table.
In our precedent tests, based on Niff findings about voltage, i was only hexediting the value.
The result was having a v1.05 yes, but in the voltage field it was blank as well as in the vid table.
Niff mentioned that the integrity wasnt correct (hence the yellow light).
Now the table is correct: v1.06 shows correctly in voltages and vid table.

I assume that this value is vital to power management handled by the driver: probably the crashes was due to the driver not allocating correctly the power based on vid tables. The entries now are physically present.

All these tests has been made with 260.63, modded to use gtx 280m driver just for games profiles.

And guess what: my new 3dmark06 score is 12999.

    Thank you.

EDIT: i forgot to add that setting the driver to adaptive seems more efficent. Temperatures drops considerably and better than before, idling around 41c, as well as clocks.
