I'm ordering the x7200 with dual 485's at the end of this month and I can't figure out which monitor is the absolute best to pair with the notebook.

Is it better to go with a 24" vs a 27" when using 2 485's for gaming?
Should I look for 120hz over IPS?

What is the best monitor, either 24" or 27" for gaming from the x7200?
I may end up purchasing 2-3 of them to use together.

Thanks for the suggestion. What is your opinion on 24" vs 27" if price isn't a factor? Will I suffer at all using a 27", or two, with dual 485m's?

No, it would not make a difference to me personally, based on 3 extra inches of real estate. If you want it, go for it. Just make sure it comes from a reputable seller, with a good warranty and good reliability and customer service ;) From Captain Obvious here lol.

And to me, I'd also make sure that the screen(s) are/were 1080p. You don't have to worry about color accuracy with the Dells :) Also, some users say that you use a good response time (under 5ms) LCD for gaming and an IPS screen for photo/video edition and when you need accurate color reproduction.

edit: This is what I use, personally: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049 but I was looking for a good monitor for gaming on a budget. Judging by your laptop's specs, you don't have to worry about money, lol :p So just get the best gaming monitor out there.

Since you're getting them for gaming, IPS panels aren't all that great. They have great color reproduction and viewing angles, but have slow response times. Even with overdrive on, the response time still can't match a TN panel.

As for 120hz monitors, they're currently all TN panels, and aren't very good for color reproduction. If you think you're even slightly interested in 3D, I would get one. If you don't use it for 3D, you can still get the 120hz refresh rate.

    i would say 120hz
    17" 60hz vs 24" 60hz vs 27" 60hz only larger
but 60hz vs 120hz will be a large difference!!!
(many game can run more than 60fps with 485 sli)

It's pointless to get a 120Hz screen unless you are planning on playing movies and games in 3D. Personally, I wouldn't suggest it because the technology is still very new and hasn't really become "mainstream".

It's like a novelty right now, much like SSDs were 2 years ago.

Not pointless at all. Even if you don't use a 120hz monitor for 3D, you can still use it for the refresh rate, which is noticeably smoother than 60hz monitors. The tradeoff though is slightly less than accurate color reproduction.

And the Dell U2711 is popular not because it's the best monitor available, it's popular because it's one of the cheapest IPS monitors on the market. A quick browse at hardforum.com will show you that there are much better monitors, but with price tags to match.

$1000 for 27" is cheap??? =O Plus, even if it is IPS, it still has a response time of 6ms, which is acceptable for me.

I'm curious, what improvements would improved refresh rates mean for the average/gaming user?

Other than using them for 3D gaming, increased refresh rates help for games or movies that have high speed action scenes. At 60hz or lower, it's possible that fast paced action sequences with lots of camera movement would introduce motion blur or stuttering. at 120hz, you're getting the benefit of 120 frames per second output versus 60. This lets scenes that otherwise are noticeably less fluid on 60hz look much smoother.

Granted, this is based on the assumption that you even notice such things on a 60hz (not everyone can). :D

Lol, I don't and I'm happy with my screen, personally... :p

But back on topic: I gave my recommendation, I suggest you do your own searching if you have any doubts :)

This is the problem, it seems there isn't a thread out there deciding on the consensus for the best gaming monitor, only threads talking about best for a certain price range. I appreciate the insights gentlemen :)
