Hey everyone, I am just about set to order my NP8662, but I want to make sure I don't have any hard drive temperature problems.

What is my best option as of now as far as my HD options? I am not interested in an SSD at this point. Is one of the sizes/speeds particularly cooler running when ordered from Xotic?

Also, could I even request no hard drive installed, and then order an aftermarket hard drive of my choice? If that would be my best option, which HD should I get?

    Thanks!

Any of the Seagate HDD's will run cool enough in the NP8662. Reach for the top shelf and get a 500GB 7200.4.

    My 250GB 7200.4 idles between 45-48°, the highest it's gotten is 54-55°. I'm impressed.

Hmmm.. So are you guys telling me to order it without an HD, and then get a Seagate from newegg for example? Or should I order straight from Xotic?

What we are saying is to buy the notebook with a Seagate drive, which XoticPC offers.

I've got the 320gb seagate 7200.3, and it runs in the mid 40s. Bought from xoticpc.

Im curious how are your temps so low when many who have the same drive are near 60? also what are your 3d mark 06 scores?

"Middle 40" are 45C... It's quite possible with your own way of bottom panel. Default one with all opened vents isn't right.
But this 45C are must be in stand-by/office application. During the hard work they must be 51-52C.

Probably. Running in mid 40s for everything doesn't make sense for this HDD.

With cooler my idle temp during browsing are around 39-42c. Don`t remember my idle without cooler. Max temp with no cooler is 54-55c after some serious copying.

By cooler you mean Silent Mode ON/OFF or some extra device for Notebook Cooling?

He means a notebook cooler. You can find info here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=304671

    @soulbreaker360: My 3dmark is 10300ish.

And yes my hdd runs in the mid 40s. 46c to be precise when I surf the web listen to music etc. It gets to 53c when I game and max I've seen is 57c when downloading 2 large files while unzipping a file to desktop while installing a software. :) No cooler, no back panel modification, and my room is about 20c-22c.

Edit : Btw how is the 500 GB seagate performing h0w1er? Is it running hot?

Ive been thinking about getting this laptop but this hard drive temp is slightly scary as I wont be using a cooler most of the time.....

what back panel modification are you talking about? link?

I don`t have a link, but basicly it`s just drilling a hole in the backpanel where the HDD is and use some net over it so most of the dust don`t get in.

I don`t have a heat issue with my 500gb 7200.4 HDD and no cooler. The new HDDs are pretty good, tempwise too.

I dont think I am going to want to actually be drilling holes in my chasis... I am just trying to figure out if it is worth it to install an aftermarket HD if any particular model runs cooler than others

I run a wd 320gb black edition(7200rpm) in my system. runs 50-53 degrees when I game for long periods. It idles 40-45 degreees under normal browsing and such. My m570tu has no venting for the drive so it should be comparable temp wise to what your looking to do.

Why spend more and buy the hard drive seperately? Ask XoticPC which hard drive you want and they'll put it in for you.

Just for the fact that I can order the specific model I want. For example, maybe one that is known to run very cool

Right. We already know that the Seagate drives and the WD drives run cool, so ask XoticPC if they can saddle you with the specific model of your choice.

Both HDDs they're selling with 16MB cache are the new 7200.4 Seagate Momentus drives. Pick one. If you want the 250GB 7200.4, you'll have to ask them for it.

Hmmmm.. I would definitely like to request a specific drive.. So the 320GB 7200 RPM is definitely going to be a Seagate Momentus, and that runs cool?

So what specific hard drive is definitely good from Xotic... Any of the Momentus basically? Are there any others?

Lol im sorry, I am just making sure I make the right decision, its my first big laptop purchase....

I just cant decide if it would be worth it to buy say, a Scorpion Black 320GB, rather than the Momentus that comes from Xotic... They seem so similar it almost seems like luck of the draw.

What you said is slap in the face to those who have spent careful time and effort pulishing reviews of their M860TU on this forum, soulbreaker360. There are really good solid reviews of the notebook around here. Go look for them. The search function has been restored so you shouldn't have any problem finding them.
