In the market for a better cooling pad for my 9377. No real budget, I'm a buy once cry one kind of person. Noise isn't a concern. I game with headphones in and the pad will be used when pushing my overclocks in "desktop mode." Air flow / head pressure are far more important to me.

As far as whether it's USB or standalone power supply, doesn't make a difference.

The best one which most people recommend is the Coolermaster Notepal U3 or U3 Plus.... It has removable/movable fans and you can replace them with your own desktop fans while doing a simple mod...

+1 on the NotePal U3. And +1 on modding it with better, adjustable fans. And maybe a light show :D It can handle 3 - 120mm fans and the original 3 fans or adjust the better fans for air intakes.

Do you want to use the notebook in your lap? The U3 wont work for that. I owned a U3 for several years and always found that to be the big drawback. I just ordered a Cooler Master NotePal LapAir hoping it will be more versatile. I still give the U3 props for the modular design, it allows you to match the fans with the intake vents for maximum cooling.

Most kudos I see in the realm of chill pads goes to the NotePal line. Thermaltake makes their "Massive" cooling pads also, which tout a single large fan. Those tend to get good reviews as well.

Well that's 3.5 votes for the U3. Just placed an order for one

This is NOT intended for use on my lap. It's for when I'm running a balls to the wall overclock gaming at 4k. Essentially using it like I would a desktop.

Quickie question: is the power supply cable some sort of standardized one? And if so what connector is it? I checked on google and saw a couple similar ones but none that were a perfect match. It would be great to use the PSU and some sort of PWM controller to be able to adjust the fan speed vs. having to use another power supply (and yes I'll be getting some fans too)

I bought this OKGEAR PA-AD-UL 12V/5V AC/DC Power adapter w/ 4pin molex connector to power the fans. Fans daisy chained.

I got Enermax T.B. Vegas Duo 120mm, each fan has a variable speed adjustment dial. I got them at Directron in 2012. but it's showing out of stock.

Also I went to HD (any local hardware store) to get flat head screws, washers and nuts to mount it to the U3.

The U3's fans are USB powered. I got a cable and plug them into a surge protector with USB power, freeing up ports. Though, I believe it's a pass through connection anyway.
