Which is the best software that allows me to clone/copy/mirror my RAID-1 hard drives, which are on my existing laptop, for installation on a new laptop?
I've heard of Acronis, but, that software does not support RAID (unless you buy their $400+ extension software).
Or, could I just, flip my HDs into the new laptop and hope that they work?
If so, what about drivers for the new hardware, etc, etc?
Old laptop is a 9262 (D900C / D901C) with SLI 8800s, new would be a 9280 (Clevo D900F) with 280GTX.
Please help....

I recommend you to install the OS new. The new system uses an other GPU, an other CPU architektur, other RAM, other Mainboad and may be other DVD Drives and HDDs.
If a you using Windows it will definatly not work! -
Hi Tom Royls,
Thanks for your reply, but I am trying to copy all of my old information/programs/data/etc into the new 9280. ie. Transfer all of the info/programs/etc that I have on my old 9262 into the new 9280. Just installing a new OS, means that I will erase all of my data. By the way, the 9262 has Vista Business 64bit, and the 9280 has Vista Ultimate 64bit.
Have I understood you correctly?

Windows will not work if they change too much hardware. And in the two systems is changing almost everything.
You can Copy your Data to an USB Drive and then to the new System.
Programs and games can be copied, but it may be that some don't work anymore. These must then be reinstalled.
And if you also want to have the shortcuts on the desktop and the Start menu, you should also copy these to your new system too. -
You should look into Acronis Migrate Easy software
A user reported that they used it on a complicated Raid setup, maybe it was Acronis True Image that didn't support Raid. -
Hi LaptonNut,
Under Boot Disk does not recognize hard drive | Forums many clients state that Migrate Easy does not work for "newer" MOBOs and drivers for RAID.
Acronis has a "workaround" by downloading a TM11 ISO image, etc. etc. Another workaround is to disable Raid support, enabling USB for DOS in BIOS, tell the BIOS that the OS is "non-Plug&Play", and assign IRQ for VGA. And, that their True Image or Migrate Easy can’t recognize dynamic volumes unless Plus Pack is installed (ca-ching $$$$).
A real headache if I ever saw one in advance!
I've heard of Paragon 9, Drive Backup 10 workstation ($74.95), http://www.paragon-software.com/business/db-workstation/, but don't know too much about this software either.
Seems that most softwares are OK for single disks but not for RAID setups. -
I believe that I found that Paragon Drive Backup 10 Workstation Edition is the perfect backup/restore software to clone/restore RAID drives, and it even makes the OS boot and tunes up drivers when loading to a new MOBO.
If anyone has already used it for RAID, please give me some tips, as I'll be downloading it by this Thursday.
Anyone interested can find more info at Paragon Drive Backup 10 Workstation - Disk imaging, Backup, Data compression, Archive encryption -
UPDATE -
After installing Paragon's drive backup 10 workstation, I can say that apart from re-activating Adobe Pro and Norton Antivirus 10 (click-activate, done), the swap of info from one computer platform to another different platform went without any problems. ie. 9262 to 9280.
After you get everything done, it's like you have your old computer programs/data/everything working on the new platform computer.
ie. This only works with Paragon's drive backup 10 workstation. The other Paragon's backups do not allow transfer from one platform and/or OS to another. The 10 workstation is the one to go with.
Just in case, I do not work or am related to Paragon. Just thought to bring out how good this software is, instead of reinstalling all programs. If you've moved from one platform to another, YOU KNOW what I'm talking about!
As for me, I do use my laptop for work, and having 1-2 days of reinstalling programs, etc. would be a hazzle. -
Did you try the Drive Backup Professional which is cheaper than Workstation?
Paragon Drive Backup Professional - Backup and restore partitions, hard disks or files
A powerful and unique technology that restores any version of Windows (since Win2K) to completely different hardware by injecting the required drivers crucial for a migration of this kind.
You can also recover the startup ability after an unsuccessful system migration to a different hardware platform with 3-d party tool. -
Websurfer,
No, I did not get Backup Pro, because it does not allow backing/mirroring a drive to a different platform. The "catch phrase" up there in your message is "3rd party tool."
I was going from a 9262 to a 9280.
The cheapest and best backup available by Paragon that allows trans-platform migrations is the Backup 10 workstation.
If anyone is just moving between the same platforms and OS, then yes, the cheaper Backup Pro would be the way to go. But, in my recent experience, if you are changing platforms and/or OS then the Backup 10 Workstation is the only one that does it.

Thanks. I overlooked that you were moving from Vista Business 64-bit to the Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Websurfer,
Not just from one to OS to another, but also from one platform to another.
Most backup/mirror softwares do not allow for your HD to be bootable, because it will have problems loading the new drivers, etc, and this causes many users to just do a fresh OS load and loose data or have to reinstall all the programs all over again.
The Backup 10 Workstation does everything for you with just point and click. And for me, the only programs that I had to reactivate (not reinstall) were Adobe Pro and Norton Antivirus. That was just one click and you're done.
