"noise" is pretty ambiguous. do you mean static?

Your fan noise? What noise? You can run in silent mode to get rid of fan noise. I have no idea what other noise the M860TU could be making, unless it's the CPU whine, which shouldn't be there through headphones.

Maybe try updating your sound drivers? (Realtek HD audio - Realtek's site). They've released quite a few updates since the M860TU came out, and I remember having stutters with the stock drivers.

Yes, im using some of the latter ones, but i still have some distortion even with the headphones for some reason. Still i might have installed the drivers before removing the older ones properly. What's the best way?

the sound is coming from interference inside the laptop

Yup an external sound card would be ideal.
@Neil McRae, crap headphones don't give you the noise, it's the high end headphones that sensitive enough will give you every frequencies, both good and bad.

I sometimes get noise from external speakers when I use my logitech revolution MX mouse to raise and lower the volume levels, but that is easily fixed by bringing the volume with the mouse up or down a bar. This normally occurs when I have paused a video.
