I just got back my P151HM from MALIBAL (no more overheating!). Before sending it out I wasn't able to install Windows on the machine, but upon booting the Windows installer just now, I noticed there is a 196GB system partition along with 500GB of unpartitioned space.

Now, nothing will boot without the Windows Setup DVD (please insert disc etc.), so is it safe to assume that I can delete that 196GB partition and merge it into the 500GB space? I would just like to use the entire drive as one partition. Do the blank drives still come with a system partition already created or do you think when servicing the machine, they created one for testing purposes? Thanks. :)

Something else you might want to consider doing is installing windows into the unpartitioned space and then browsing the contents of the system partition through windows. If it's not anything you want to keep (or if there's nothing there), you can easily delete it and extend your windows partition after installation, because windows comes with its own partition editor. After installation you can find it at Start > Computer (right click) > Manage > Disk Management.

Testing they should have partitioned it to checked, I'm surprised they didn't delete the partition. But yes, you can just delete it, then create one massive partition and install windows there.

EDIT: Or you could do what Kuril suggested.

The weird thing is that if I point the installer to that partition, it tells me I can't install Windows on it because it isn't NTFS.

Oh well, I'll probably just delete it.

Yeah, because if it isn't NTFS chances are Windows won't be able to browse it anyway. If you were really interested in seeing what's on there you could use an Ubuntu live cd, but I think it's safe to delete.

If you're just installing Windows fresh, you can go ahead and clear that partition. It's not necessary to keep it. Windows will roll that space back into the unallocated space on the drive for your install :)
