I was reading on some sources that there were firmware updates released by Sony for laptop blu-ray players. is there anyway to see what type of firmware updates your certain player may be eligible for or if you need a update? Thanks for any help!

The only firmware updates you can use from Sony is for Sony BD-ROM units that are installed on Sony notebooks ONLY. You cannot flash a firmware update into an OEM BD-ROM unit installed on a 3rd party vendor system. First, it won't work - Sony's firmware has installed code that detects whether or not the unit is in a 3rd party system or not, and halts the install before the flash fries the chip. Second, if you were to actually succeed, it would render the player useless.

If you're having a problem with BD playback, (especially if it's an HP notebook with a Sony/Optiarc drive in it) then the problem is a software update, and not a firmware update. They finally released a bulletin on the issue last month. If your system isn't an HP or a Sony, then it's still a software issue unless a firmware update for your drive has been specifically uploaded to the support page for your system on the vendor site.

I think i see what your saying. I have a sager laptop and nothing on xotics (who i bought from) says anything about a firmware update. when you say software update though your talking about like powerdvd or whichever player you use correct? im just using the bundled cyberlink blu ray software which came with the computer. Is this a good software to be using or should i be looking for a seperate software solution. only reason i ask is im having some trouble playing some of the newer blu-rays which will just not play or show up as being in the drive or will force me to restart for the player to start up and play the movie.
