Hi. I just received my P150HM Lotus today from Malibal. The experience I had with Malibal was mostly positive and I'm impressed with the machine for the whole part, but I'll go into more detail on that later after Im over this issue.
wow. I'm bummed out a bit. The UPS guy walked in and said he had a Collect-on-Delivery Fee. 190 dollars is a lot of money for a college student to suddenly have to pay in extraHad to ask my roommate to pay it for me.
Is this sort of fee normal for international orders? I was not informed about this from neither Malibal nor UPS. As a matter of fact, a malibal agent had told me that UPS expedited is the way to go as there are no more fees to pay, after I pay the 166 dollars, and it includes all the brokerage costs etc. I've seen alot of international orders on these boards, especially from canada like myself.
this issue surely must have been raised before if its a regular thing?? or is it just a lemon for me and UPS just screwed up on their part with customs? or am i just flipping out and $190 is not a big deal for anyone else(lol) I'm confused. Please enlighten me.

We said with UPS Worldwide Expedited there is no brokerage but you still have to pay your GST/PST/HST taxes.

I refuse to have anything shipped via UPS after being stung by those crooks in the past. I have been dinged $50.00 brokerage fees on a $50.00 used motherboard. That did not include the taxes that were also due when it arrived. I don't mind the taxes but those brokerage fees are outright crooked. Some guy started a class action lawsuit against UPS over there ridiculous brokerage fees to Canadians. If those are fees for taxes you cant get around them, but if they are brokerage fees then thats not good.

You're right. I checked the slip again and 170 dollars of it is GST. Taxes totally slipped my mind. I was basically reading up on all the UPS 'horror stories' (horrible customer service, throwing packages, ripping off on brokerage fees in Canada and whatnot) while I was waiting for the delivery, and was kinda on edge. I feel kinda stupid lol
but on the other hand $20 of it is still filed under brokerage! should i contact them over this? -
I found something like this:
Bond Fees
Customers are responsible for payment of duties and taxes. When funds are not provided in advance by the customer, and UPS must post a bond to allow UPS shipments to be released in advance of payment to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), a fee of 2.7 percent (minimum $5.85 on Worldwide Standard™; minimum $10 on UPS Worldwide Express Plus™, UPS Worldwide Express™, UPS Worldwide Express Saver™ and UPS Worldwide Expedited™of the amount advanced by UPS will be charged. To avoid bond fees, call 1-800-PICK-UPS and ask about our Prepayment or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) plans.

All I can say is the post office doesnt charge a penny for fees. They give totally excellent service. THe tracking is not as good as say Purolator or Fed-Ex. $20.00 is acceptable for a large expensive package if you got it fast and damage free. You would probably be wasting your time if you called them about it anyways.

Ok thanks for the replies guys. guess ill just have to buy my roommate a series of dinners over the next few weeks

Well, 3yrs ago when I recieved my Asus I had to pay customs here in UAE (135$)...I did not know about it then!
Now, im ordering another laptop, this time im ready, I have around 150-200$ for expected customs!
Sucks for us international customers, we have to pay Shipping + extra customs/tax fees! :-( -
To be fair, we have to pay taxes when we purchase locally - buying internationally means those same taxes are paid, along with higher shipping. It's always our choice whether to buy internationally, or to buy from someplace local - who charge us higher rates to cover the fact everything is being shipped.

Even more technically still, this thread is about Canadians, so we have GST/PST/HST as originally mentioned
I'm fortunate enough to not have any provincial taxes.
-
If I choose USPS do they still charge me canadian taxes?
-
-
WHen the package arrives at the door you will have to pay any provincial HST or GST due. They are good as they accept cash or Visa, not sure about other methods. Tey may even take a cheque, but it better be good because cheating the government out of taxes with a bogus cheque could get you in a lot of hot water, not to mention fees and penalty's.

I don't know thedarkclaw, we always recommend calling your local customs agency as they are different for each country so it's hard for us to keep track of them all. Another place to call is your local post office or UPS, they probably would know as well.

I got my laptop from Malibal today, and has to pay ~$150 for the taxes and the customs handling rate. I used USPS EMS(Express Worldwide) for the shipment. I will never ship via UPS ever again as my past experiences as well for others has been....brown.

People need to understand that no matter what you do, unless Canadians drive down to Vegas and pick up your laptop and smuggle it back in your luggage without declaring it (which obviously isn't legal) you are going to have to pay GST/PST when it crosses the border. That $150 is going to happen no matter what.

Im from Quebec, i had to pay more them your 190$ but it was only for Quebec tax + Canadian tax. When you buy more them 20$ worth, Canadian Duty tax will be applied. I choose UPS Expedited which cover the brokerage fee. The Equation goes like this "Laptop + Shipping + Brokerage Fee + Canadian Tax". If you choose UPS standard you will end up paying brokerage fee + tax, which is far more them 190$, it can grow up to 300$ easily if from quebec. I had to pay around 230$ tax because im from Quebec with UPS Expedited.
What am trying to say, if you choose UPS standard you will end up getting your laptop far more late them UPS Expedited. IF you choose UPS Expedited, you end up paying no brokerage fee and you get your laptop way faster. I favor UPS Expedited because you end up paying near the same at the end. Maybe 20-30$ dollar difference. Correct me if im wrong. -
nm looks like i found the shipping charges for at least the np8170
UPS Worldwide ExpeditedSM $176.89
UPS Standard To Canada $66.54
UPS Express SaverSM Next Day $198.80 -
Just got tracking information that my laptop was released from customs. Assuming it arrives tomorrow, that's only 6 business days so not bad at all for USPS.
-
UPS Expedited cost me $199.25 with standard brokerage fee included in price.
With your UPS Standard To Canada $66.54 add 80-100$ extra fees for brokerage.
Bought from malibal in Canada, UPS charged me $190 C.O.D.!!?
