Its a disaster! My friends were playing baseball and a crazy fluke of chances, the ball headed backwards after being hit and slammed into my 5797, putting a big black hole in the LCD. Sager says its $510 to fix, but that is leaps and bounds outside what I can afford. Are there any alternatives besides just leaving it? I'm sure I could repair it myself if I had the parts.

This should help.

The eBay seller should have a few 17 inch WSXGA panels. -
Thanks a TON soviet. + rep. I've purchased what I believe is the same exact model you did:

Overall, was installation very hard? You mentioned having to grind some things to make it fit. LCD installation / repair is a brand new thing for me, but do you think it should be pretty self explanatory? I've got the service guide for the system to guide me along with way. -

Damnit, emike09, haha. You're making me regret not having my camera with me when I was installing my screen. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5259892&postcount=8
I've replaced dozens and dozens of screens on several of my clients' notebooks before and including my old M38AW and my M570TU, so it was a walk in the park for me. I needed to cut the right bracket in half because the TLA2 was a perfect rectangle while the TLB2 had an indentation on the upper part of where the right bracket would mount on. This means that the panel would not be anchored at the upper right. However, the panel is screwed down so sturdily already that it doesn't need the upper right anchor. But just to be sure, I used thermal tape as an alternative to hold down the upper right.
When you receive the TLA2, you will need to remove all of the OEM brackets and the inverter enclosure. It shouldn't take too long if you have a Dremel and a grind wheel. Keep your old inverter because the TLA2 inverter isn't compatible with the existing motherboard cable.
The thing that I like about the eBay seller is their dead pixel warranty. They have a 180 day, yes six month, no dead pixel warranty. If for any reason the screen is flawed in any way, you can ship it back to them for a replacement. They also ship the screen in an antistatic sleeve and is lined with so much bubble wrapping it's not even funny. You are getting a quality product if you buy from that seller. -
Awesome. Thanks Soviet for your help. I might PM you for help next week when I start the repair, I'm thinking I might be able to do this one without too much headache. I purchased from the same seller as you. Great to hear about. A 6 month no dead pixel warranty is phenomenal. You have no idea how excited I am that I don't have to pay friggin $510 to have the screen fixed.
Did you have the 1680x1050 screen before? What differences did you notice between your original screen and this one? -

I went from WUXGA to WUXGA. I just needed a reason to take advantage of the Microsoft cashback thing. My old TLB2 panel is sitting in a shipping box at home so I will take a picture of the indentation when I get back so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about.
I was thinking about going for LG's LED panels, but I didn't find too many reviews for them, and I think they are a bit too slim to fit in the display lid. All I know is that the TLA2 is LG's sexiest 17 inch CCFL panel. It's a bit brighter and the contrast is a bit more defined compared to my old TLB2. Overall, it's still a neutral screen, which I like.
If you don't want to grind the bracket and just want a straight drop in fit, you can pick up the TLB2 here. It's a little bit cheaper than the TLA2.

Cool. Well I'm excited for the upgrade. I've been wanting to go RGBLED, but I"ve heard others here say its not possible. That'd be the best way to go for me.

Well I finally got to installing the sweet baby into my laptop. I would never do that again, however. It was more work than it was worth, twisting and squeezing and prying and trying to get everything together at the same time while managine the microscopic screws. Like a lot of my repairs, I have the system completely closed up, with 6-7 extra screws that never made it back into the system.

That's a lot of unused screws. If you did it properly, you should only have one unused screw, and that is for the upper right bracket. Anyway, congrats on the successful job, emike09.
-
It is. But its sturdy in every way. The six screws on the sides, one in the middle up top, and one in the middleish on bottom. Plus the bezel screws. I'm confident it will do the job. A fine jerry-rig in my book. What a beautiful screen!

Indeed. The TLA2 is a marvelous work of art. The D901C and D900F guys can swap it in too if they want to replace their screens sometime in the future.
-
yup tl a2 is the best out there for a tn 17" panel as i have always said!!
-
LP171WU1TLA5 for curiousity sake what's the difference seen a3-a5 and they're the same size.
A matte 1920x1200 screen, hmm I will prolly do a screen swap some time in the future. -
dont get the tla5 not a very good screen none of the others are as nice as the tl a2 period

okidoki I don't hate matte much here tho, I now have a glossy screen but it took sometime for me to get used to.
-
actually the tla5 is normally glossy and is a dell screen for th 1730 its not a very nice screen either
-
Are you sure? Will it fit right in?
Also, is this a TN panel? I hate those. Is it possible to find a replacement RGB-Led, IPS or MVA panel to fit the D900 ? -
no you will never find one anything but tn. yes its tn but it is a VERY nice tn panel prob the best i have seen and i deal with lcds all the time. the tla2 will fit in minus the upper and lower brackets which come off pretty easy

hey guys - is there a way I can find out what screen sits in my D900F now? Any software? Without having to take my machine apart?
My vendor could not help me - said it was not possible to say without opening up the machine, as they put in whatever they have at hand ... So as suspected, the screen is the one area with their Clevo's where they are trying to save costs. And it shows - the screen is what I'm least satisfied with about my D900F, there's simply no way to calibrate it to get correct colours and greytone scale, AND keeping a sensible gamma and overall colour temperature.
I have an external Dell screen to compare with - one that is thoroughly calibrated - and it's simply much more satisfying than my lappy's, even though the resolution is lower. Granted, I expected this - a TN panel simply cannot compete with an S-IPS when it comes to colour accuracy and viewing angles, but still... -

Look in device manager and look at the hardware ID for your display.

Brilliant. Also brilliant that I didn't think of that myself. Thanks.
It's a LPLE400, it says. What make that is, I don't know - but I'm sure I can find better. -
