I was walking to the bus stop at school today, and the strap on the laptop bag broke (the same bag that came with the notebook), and the bag fell on the ground. I just got home and find my laptop not even turning on. No sounds, nothing. The only thing that happens is that the leftmost LED in the front of the laptop (where the audio jacks are) turns green if I hold the power button long enough. That usually means my laptop should be on, but it's not. I've opened my laptop up through the back and didn't find any noticable physical damage, and I've taken out the battery and put it back in. I also tried running it without the battery in it. Any ideas what might be the problem? I'm guessing it's a broken HD. If it is, can I replace it quickly (ie. without having to send it back to xoticpc)?

What a horrible time to have a broken laptop, right before my finals. Sigh.

    Anyway, any help appreciated.

P.S. I can do anything that you guys ask me to in order to check my laptop (ie. take pictures).

    Vin

Unfortunately, if it's not even POSTing, you likely have far worse issues than a broken hard drive. Like Chango said, try unplugging and replugging everything you can, and look for anything that may be unseated or out of place on the motherboard, but that's about all you can do. Is it still under warranty?

remove battery, all hardware and reseat them:
    - CPU*
    - RAM*
    - Videocard*
    - Battery
    - Wifi card
    - TV Tuner
    - Optical Drive
    - HDD
    - Bluetooth module
    - Turbo Mem module

    * I recommend to only use these components when re-seating the parts... since they are the only essential parts that are needed to POST the system.

If it does not post, it could be the motherboard.

Quick questions that can greatly help you:
    - when did you get the notebook?
    - which bag did you use when the strap broke?

Okay, so firstly, thanks for the replies guys.

I'm not good with computer hardware (especially notebooks), so it might take me a while to unplug and replug everything. What does re-seating it mean?

I bought the computer May 26th of last year. Which actually means I'm still under the warranty. The thing is that I live in Vancouver which means I have to send it international...which would cost a lot of money.

The bag I used was the one black one that comes with the laptop when I first recieved it. The part that broke was the medal hook part that connects the strap with the actual bag.

I'm going to try unplugging and replugging the things. I'll let you guys know. Also, if I find anything unusual I'll take pictures.

    Thanks

    Vin

Okay, the parts I circled in red are the only parts that I unplugged and replugged. Notebook still won't turn on. Which other parts should I take out?

That 2nd circle means that you took out and installed the cpu back in? Do the memories+GPU too :)

this could actually work in your favor.

if the bag was defective... which caused the notebook to be damaged from that... then the vendor/manufacturer should be obligated to repair or replace the damaged system.

contact them immediately since the warranty will be up in a month.

look at the user's manual, it tells you how to remove most of everything.

re-seat means to physically remove a component that is connected to the system and re-insert/re-secure it back into the same spot.

    re-plugging wire will not due.

    again....

remove battery, all hardware and reseat them:
    - CPU*
    - RAM*
    - Videocard*
    - Battery
    - Wifi card
    - TV Tuner
    - Optical Drive
    - HDD
    - Bluetooth module
    - Turbo Mem module

Similar thing happened to my friend's HP twice. Pressed the power button, all indication lights showed up but no HP logo screen or BIOS or whatsoever. But all you need to do is unplug the hard drive and replug it. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

How is that showing the cpu? It's showing the hard drive and the cpu/gpu fans...

He has tried unplugging and replugging the hard drive, and it dinn't work, and as said before, if it isn't posting, it's not just the hard drive...

    Alright, new update.

To make a long story short, my laptop is working again - so yay to that.

Yesterday, I tried reseating the hardware, but I only managed to take out the HD and unplug/replug a few things. That didn't do anything; but I didn't want to risk breaking something due to ignorance.

So when I woke up this morning, I opened back up my laptop and took out the HD, Video Card, RAM, and this one thing I'm not really sure what it was:

Then I reseated the Video Card, HD, and RAM. I turned on my computer and notice that the power button now lights up and my CD-ROM drive is doing something. But still a black screen.

I went back and checked everything over - but I knew I was making progress. I saw the the RAM wasn't completely inside it's socket, so I took it back out and firmly pushed it in (that's what she said). Then I turned my computer back on and I got the POST!

I put my HD back in and prayed that vista would work. I turned on my computer, and was greeted by the vista sound.

Now, the first time logging back on windows was a bit weird, I'm pretty sure there was something weird with the HD, because my time was set to October 9th, 2014. My wireless wasn't work properly or something, not really sure what it was; when I tried opening Firefox, google would appear to be "insecure". I changed my time/date and restarted. Now everything seems to be working fine. I'll do some tests later to let you guys know what's going on.

Anyway, thanks everyone - 'specially Gophn - for the help! I'm glad I don't have to send my laptop back to Xotic for them to fix.

On a side note though, I'm just curious as to what actually did happen. From what I gather, it is the Video Card that wasn't seated properly?

I recommend to still contact XoticPC if you want them to replace your faulty notebook bag.
