As I have mentioned before - only dpctech.net have the 9262

£2750 for the identical spec machine to mine - I save approx £300 after duty which will cover 1 maybe 2 returns under warranty.

Hopefully it won't come to that.

I'm not sure whether Rock will ever stock this laptop - as they have had nearly a year to decide whether or not to sell it - and so far they haven't

The Alienware M9750 is old hat now, but a good bargain at the moment.
The m15x is a very nice looking laptop - but at a ridiculous price!
The Sager 5792 looks nice - and if you get it from www.rockdirect.com (UK) looks even nicer (albeit some will say OTT)

but if you want raw power - the 9262 is the kiddie.........better (but not better looking) that the m17x - and better than the XPS M1730 - on the basis that the competition run mobile CPU's and the 9262 runs proper desktop CPU's - which have an infinitely better availability than mobile's and cost less too!

I do feel for those people who thought they were buying something standardized when they bought Clevo's tho' - I've watched them for quite some time now and can conclude that although they can run the latest hardware there is always a snag i.e.

I own a Clevo D900T (Savrow Katana K90, Alienware M7700 and so on) - and although the laptop is not MXM, it does have a modular graphics system, and can run graphics cards upto a 7950GTX (currently running an X800) - but my motherboard revision (5.4) does not allow such an upgrade. If I changed my motherboard to a v6+ I would be able to upgrade to a 7950GTX but at cost!

from then I have witnessed the Clevo D900C (NP9260) - which is essentially a D901C (9262) - and was supposed to be, last summer, the worlds first quad core laptop - but then Sager/Clevo concluded that running quad cores shortened the laptops life - hence a motherboard upgrade (9261) D901C - which does run Quad cores - but can't run 8800M's - which forced yet another motherboard upgrade to run 8800's (9262).

So, do you get my drift - albeit Clevo builds laptops to a standardized format - they still have a lot of work to do when it comes to upgradeability.

The biggest thing i'll have to live down is the sound system.........

I owned a Toshiba Qosmio G30 - and once you've heard the sound quality from one of those - no other laptop comes close! - and the 9262 is aparently inferior to the sound system of a D900T - and the D900T is crap upside of a Qosmio.

But then again - I heard many horror stories about Qosmio's - and saw the lack of upgradeability first hand when I upgraded mine from a CoreDuo to a Core2Duo. I couldn't really fault the Tosh's build quality - but it is inferior to a Clevo, and the 9262 looks to be in a league of it's own with regard to the design of the cooling system, which is yet another reason why I bought one!

I just hope that the resellers such as Rock charge the extra premium for such machines when they become available! - I don't want to have ordered from USA for nothing! :)

yeah rock is waaaay to expsensive, looking only at the 9262 for now, i know i can get the NP5792 from novtech for about £1500 which aint bad but i want dual 8800m's.

might have to reconsider getting it from abroad the nly worry i have is it i breaks i will have to pay to send it back. and importing from outide the EU i will get stung will TAX, not sure if its on the $$$ price or on the £££ price and the cost of delivery is a bit steep as well.

shame novatech not offer the 9262.

I was thinking the same thing.Selling my 5791 and adding some 500-1000 euros would easily help me get 8800M GTX sli...but europeans have no need for hi tech laptops apparently...or no money for it :D

ur better off with the XPS M1730 m8

for UK enthusiasts - Dell is the better deal - 3yr warranty for the price of 2 and £200 off (free delivery)

got mine within 7 days of ordering - very pleased with it. and have the piece of mind that when/if it goes wrong - Dell will send a tech out to repair it at my home or work.

A better deal than the likes of Rock, who will collect your machine, leave you without it for a week or two (or three).

Plus for less than £2000 I can accidentally knock my laptop off the counter at my place of work and Dell will replace it with a brand spanker! - because I got 1 year accidental damage cover as well!.

ya can't lose really with the Dell. :)

WHAT!?!? - well, if the 1730 is ugly, what does that make the 9262?

How does the D901C differ in appearance to a D900T? (aside from a few touches such as putting 2 silver buttons on the LH side of the keyboard)

Trust me m8 - you need to see a 1730 in the flesh b4 you can cast your judgments.

I currently own a D900T, which essentially, looks wise is just about the same as the D901C, except mine has that nice blue paint job (with nice evidence that it was done in a spray booth like half blue/half black PCMCIA slot blanking plate!) AND a M1730, there really is no comparison........

if you turn the flashy lights off on the Dell, it still looks better than the D90**

And as for build quality - how can a magnesium body be a bad thing? certainly better than 'flexible' plastic.

No doubt (as ever) I will get flamed on this forum for casting my opinions based on personal experience.

Some say the D901C has the best cooling system in the business - I wonder how many said that when the D900T came out???

I had to flash the BIOS on my D900T with a keyboard firmware upgrade to bring the fans on full power with FN+F2 - which, incidentally I have to do to keep the palm rest area (where the graphics card is) below 70C which I think is pathetic - and no wonder why it blew up the first time!

Yet when I play games such as Infernal and Crysis with the 1730 @ 1920x1200 the max temp I've ever seen from the GPU is 70C and you'll be lucky if the CPU touches 50!

Couple that with a 3 year on-site warranty and 1 year's accidental damage cover for less than 2000 quid and you have a killer notebook that kills the competition simply because the others can't match the performance and piece of mind for the money - hence the reason I backed out of the whole D901C debacle (which was the best thing I ever did)

If you don't like Dell based on a bad experience with them - well I wonder, as a percentage how many customers Dell has per year and how many as dissatisfied against satisfied - i'll bet the percentages are the same - I know people who have had problems with Dell, but I also know many who haven't - go figure!

Either way I hope your happy with your prospected purchase - but as for the 1730 - don't knock it till you've tried it. :D

And, for all you Clevo lover's out there - just think - if the D901C would have been available with the spec that I ordered in the first place - I wouldn't have got the 1730 - I would have been 'Stuck' with the Clevo!

Would that have been a good thing? - well, if the 'suspected' performance is anything to go by - YES, BUT what about everything else? - NO!

It's pointless having the world's fastest notebook if:

Firstly You have no international support in case of a breakdown and secondly (and thirdly) - you own a notebook which is made by a company that 'John Doe' has never heard of, not to mention looks so minimalistic that when it comes to the time to sell it - you end up trying to sell it purely on performance, and your average John Doe doesn't even remotely know what your talking about! - hence the reason why I've seen D901C's selling for £800 on ebay!

Light-up keyboards and Asus EEE's are the wave of the future - get used to it - you'll see more notebooks with fancy lights - because at the end of the day - performance is only half of the equation - if it don't look desirable, it won't be! (and when it lights up it does :D )

In retrospect - none of this was Xotic's fault - I can vouch for them as a company - they even gave me a refund for the UK keyboard I ordered (which I knew was non-refundable at the time) - once I heard of the 1730 with 8800's I had considered my options when I decided that I was unhappy with my order (End of January) - and had considered that if I couldn't get a refund, I would have to sell it on ebay - it was then when it dawned on me what a big mistake I made. STILL - none of that matters now, cuz in the end I got what I wanted.

one VERY VERY VERY VERY satisfied M1730 owner.

sorry missed out another VERY :D

well the 9262 can have a custom paint job.
what the 9262 is made of plastic?
    i wont i like opinion

its not that i have had bad experience with them, though ive heard a lot of horror stories about them, the m1730 jyt doesn look nice if it was plain or something then yeah okay i would coinsider it but with multi colour thing i just dont like the look

why would i need international support if i buy in the UK?
everyone else might like lights but i dont i think they are pointless

ahve you done a reivew of the m1730 or seen any?

Yes, the 9262 is made of plastic - it shares basically the same design that has served Clevo for 4 years - some would commend them for that - but then again - how many ripped into Dell for marketing notebooks that looked identical for years - such as Inpiron 8x00 series - many said it was about time for a change, and Dell responded. (Just like offering XP - Dell does listen to customers)

Speaking as an owner of the 1730 - if style is not your thing, then I guess I'm wasting my time here (flame wars! lol) - The Clevo is just too plain, too minimalist to stand out in a crowd, some would say that is a good thing - as if you don't stand out in a crowd, then your safe as no-one will notice you - but when you want to sell your notebook - being able to stand out in a crowd is what you need - basically, if it ain't desirable, then your going to have an hard time selling it (or getting what you ask for it anyway!), and like it or not - Flashing lights and light up keyboards, are going to be the only thing that will attract people to this notebook, because in a few years, you won't be able to sell it as a high performance machine, because there will be better!

You can't sell the M1730 on portability, but you can sell it on looks - it may not be your cup of tea, just like Porsche or BMW may not be - but when it comes to selling it, it's not what you think of the product that matters - it's what other's think - and I can tell you, that even with a Ferrari paint job, your going to find it hard trying to convince John Doe that the 'housebrick' plain jane Clevo is the one to have.

Future notebook designs will take cues from Dell and Asus (that is, if they intend to remain profitable) - so expect more flashy lights, and smaller, lighter designs.

Regarding your prospective purchase - I assume your looking for a distributor of the Clevo D901C in the UK - if that is so then obviously - you should receive a UK warranty at least - but international warranty would be nicer - because you never know where you may end up these days!

And with regard to your last question - I haven't done a review - but after running it for 30 odd hours - I did post on the Dell forum, my first impressions - I glowing recommendation for Dell as I ordered it on the 4th of March and received it by the 11th (they said ETA 19th March) - which, sounds hell of a lot better than ordering a 9262 on the 15th December 07 (ETA end Jan) - only to find that ETA became end of Feb, then at the end of Feb ETA became unknown!

Now I understand that there is an ETA for 901C with 2x8800 for 24th March - BUT once again - this is an ETA (and more so, it's a Clevo ETA - hint hint!)

And we all know what a Clevo ETA is don't we? :)

Dude thank you very much for ur kind opinion.
99% of people think that the XPS m1730 is the ugliest notebook in history, even beating a commodore 64.

Sager, as far as I have seen are good with ETA's. THis ETA is different from the rest, for it is a fixed date, not a braod time period.

Furthermore, the OP wanted a 9262. Not an XPS thank you very much.

    Which 99%?

99% of the Fanboi's in here perhaps - or 99% of some other 'virtual' source??

Surely can't be 99% of the buying public because I own a computer shop and have, since receiving my notebook had every person who has seen it 'green with envy'

Come to think of it - I had my Clevo D900T in the very same shop and nobody even battered an eyelid.

Maybe the 99% is an overexaggeration on your part - for starters, there is no definitive proof - i.e. statistics the prove that percentage is correct - except for you and maybe 99% of your friends, who I have no doubt will probably own Clevo's

Statistically that true figure could be 9% - albeit that is very over optimistic (see 2nd and 3rd paragraph)

Secondly - how can Sager be good with ETA's when they screwed up 2 with my pre-order!?!?! = first it was end of Jan, then End of Feb, or do you have short term memory loss?

and finally - there is an old saying - What wants........never gets.

And that was so true for the Clevo I ordered - I wanted and never got! - and yes, no doubt your going to tell me that I should have been more patient - when I call waiting for a notebook for nearly 3 months being more than enough patience!

Tell ya what - how about this..........you order a notebook - say on the 4th of March, then your told it will arrive on or before the 19th - then it actually turns up on your doorstep on the 11th - hows that for an ETA - a Dell ETA

And no, it's not knackered either! - it's absolutely faultless - and I'm fussy, after all, if I weren't fussy I would have had the Clevo wouldn't I?

I know, but what sounds cooler when it comes to bragging rights........

to tell your friends that you own a Citroen, or.........to tell em you own a BMW?

When you tell people you own a BMW, they know you own an high performance motor - your not forever planting your foot down trying to impress them, because they just 'know'

The same thing will be said of the next important 3 letters:

    X = Xtreme
    P = Performance
    S = System

You will say those letters, and people will know.

What would they say if you said - Sager, or Clevo, or 9262, or D901C?

    Sager who?
    Who's a Clevo boy then?
    926 what?
wow that's a mouthful - sounds like a Casio watch!

    dude.

just stop the flaming and speculation...

    Idont know where 2 start...

    how about some quotes?

"Dell hurry up and release the super ugly and overly heavy XPS 1730 so we can get a realistic view of how bad it really is!"

"Actualy, having looked at the pictures again, I have jut about decided not to order this computer at all, as I fear people will laugh at me because of the design of this thing. I mainly want to use it for work, as I need a very powerfull computer for that, and this would do if i hadn't been for this fact."

"I have seen/used this notebook at a DELL store in the mall and it is butt fugly! Sorry guys that have one but, it is huge and bulky the imagery on the cover is just dumb. And it has enough goofy lights to give a UFO or a lightbright a run for it's money. Granted it is a gaming power house and does what it is made for I just wish it was as good looking as it is functional."

"Hahaha I agree, they all look like big bricks of ugly plastic."

"never thought they could do worse than the original XPSs but they did....absolutely hideous

just buy or build a real gaming PC and save yourself the embarassment of owning that thing"

"Any ideas when Dell will release a non-fugly m1730? You know, one without a paintjob that looks like a 1970s pimp-mobile and without a white keyboard that literally looks like it's replacement keyboard for the real one that broke?"

Would you like more? It is all opinion, but the general consensus would say that the XPS is very ugly. Of course people are staring at ur nb, ugly things tend to stand out. (BTW all these quotes are not from the Clevo Forum)

"except for you and maybe 99% of your friends, who I have no doubt will probably own Clevo's"

    OK.

Now that is like personal flaming. I dont want to insult you, but where did you get the idea that ll my friends own clevos?

I may persent many many examples of how Clevo is better in many aspects, this thread may be filled with them but it will not change ur opinion.

Why me? Chaz himself said the following:

"I have tested both the D900C and the XPS M1730. If I had to choose between the two, it would take me half a heartbeat to choose the Sager. Reasons:
-More solid build quality. The D900C has thicker plastic and a more rigid chassis.
-Better keyboard - the Dell's feels kind of cheap and has flex. The D900C suffers from neither.
-You get what you pay for. IMO the Dell is overpriced compared to what you can get in the Sager for the same amount of money.
-Better performance. There's nothing faster than a D900C. Period.
-Battery life. Believe it or not, the D900C even with the quad-core outlasts the M1730.
-Service. Yes the XPS has better service than the standard Inspiron but service through a reseller like PowerNotebooks or XoticPC will be superior.

Both the M1730 and the D900C are great machines, and I would be happy with either . . . but the Sager has the edge in a head-to-head comparison. Note that this is my OPINION and should be taken as such."

So, the goal of ur laptop is for people to know about it or for you to be 100% satisfied that you have invested ur money in what is best????

    BOTH!

I could be happy with a Ford mondeo ST200 - BUT when I come to sell it I would be appealing to a minority i.e. Ford lovers.

On the other hand - I could own a BMW, Mercedes or Porsche - and I would be appealing to everybody.......

Because those are badges, which people aspire to. To own means they have achieved something in life.

I get it all the time - I've owned **** cars, Rover's, Fords, Vauxhalls.

I thought they were good - at the time, but only I did - and when I tried to tell everybody else - they wouldn't listen.

What lesson did that teach me...........well, when I bought them, they represented excellent value for money, BUT when I come to sell them, they also represented the biggest liability!

So, I bought what may be to some - over rated........BUT to most they are 'The Ultimate Driving machine'

BMW - I run my own business, and outwardly, to members of the public - it shows :D

When I have to perform an housecall - it is better to 'Arrive' than to 'turn up'

In an ordinary car - you 'Turn up' - but in a BMW you 'Arrive'

Now I may jump behind the wheel of a Fiat, or Peugeot, that may feel better to drive than a BMW, but the point I'm making is this - when you come to sell it - it no longer matters what you think, it's what everyone else thinks that's important, therefore the first priority with any purchase it to make sure your buying something 'desirable' - i.e.

not just something which you desire - but something which is 'desirable'

you buy a BMW, you can't go wrong - or a Porsche, Audi, Ferrari etc etc etc.

You buy a Skoda, Vauxhall, Ford etc - then you have a problem selling it (well getting what you want for it anyway)

The same applies to the laptop in question - I am 150% happy with my purchase,. because I know that when the time comes to dispose of it - that the 3 letters of it's title will mean something to prospective buyers - i.e.

XPS will be as desirable badge to own in notebooks, as BMW is in cars.

And that is what matters - because since I've been in that frame of mind, I haven't been short of cash!

I even managed to sell a 14 year old BMW with a knackered engine for $1000 about 5 months ago. - That's what I mean by desirable!

Bloke could have bought a perfectly good clapped out mondeo for that sort of money - but NO, he wanted the badge :D

Can't blame him really (even if he did buy a ratter)

    Thank You. :)

You proved my point exactly. I just gave you quotes from many different users on their opinion regarding the XPS 1730, including reputable users such as Chaz. Nevertheless, their opinion was disregardedd and you asserted yours as the determining factor. Theoroy of Phsycology. As I said earlier, no matter how much I say, u will think that XPS is better due to the fact that there is no room to accept that anything else as being better. I agree, the XPS is cheaper in Europe, as of now. Yes, as of now it performs better. THat does not matter. Users are paying their hard earned money for something they wish to be top of the line of quite some while. Not top of the line for the next 2 weeks. And, If everyone had ferrai's(CLevo), the importance and coolness factor of owning a Ferrari will not be there. Thus, there are cheap makes, wannabes, such as GT, Viper etc. for those folks who cant grasp the coolness and blatant superiority of a ferrari

Yes but, I really dont like proving him wrong every time. This thraed was not meant for a flame war, rather to help the OP. THe OP wanted to buy a Clevo in UK, he posted it in the CLevo Forum. He did not want to purchase a XPS 1730. If he was unsure about what to get, he would have made a thread in teh WNSIB forum. But he made ut here so he can get help identifinying a reseller in UK. Not to hear crap about Dell XPS. In fact, I the mods like, I think they should delete the last posts cus they do not asist the OP, but thats just waht I think...

    Andy,

I appreciate your opinion and I am happy you like the M1730, but lets please get back to topic. I, for one, would be interested in finding where I can buy a 9260 in the UK and what the prices are.

One thing that I suggest you do is Call ROck up, they have price matching, and see if you can make a deal through them. Its worth a try.

They woun't do that. XoticPC is from US, they are Europeans and they have their 3 year collect & return pan-European warranty, which Xotic doesn't have. It wouldn't do any good.

as far as im aware, the reason why companies like Rock are more expensive than Novatech, is because Novatech do not offer the European Insurance Backed Collect & Return Warranty, meaning they can't go as low as the others. I couldn't really gather much info from Novatech or didn't really look into it but i guess this could be the reason... you're paying for the better service and peace of mind extending into Europe. I don't think Novatech offers this, and probably is UK only. Maybe someone can prove me wrong.

And what point was that - because all I see is Clevo fanboi's trying to compare their laptop to a Ferrari!

For starters - which goes back to my point - everybody has heard of Ferrari - only you lot, and a few others have heard of Clevo, so how the hell can you compare a Clevo to a Ferrari..

For starters - Ferrari has status - Clevo doesn't

Fair enough the Clevo is a fast machine - but if your going to compare it to a car - it should really be referred to as a custom hot-rod!

Some of those have 1000hp - but they are hardly what you would see parked outside a stately home.

It is a deluded opinion and shows just how brainwashed you are when you try to compare a relatively unknown notebook to a exotic car like a Ferrari.

Regarding chaz's opinion - I go back to the record - so plastic is stronger than Magnesium then? (simply an observation - but on that observation I have based my disbelief)

And another deluded remark is to state that users wish to spend their hard earned cash on something that they wish to be top of the line for quite some time - well, I got more bad news for ya - no matter what make the laptop is - EVEN IF FERRARI BUILT ONE - it would NOT be the fastest for as long as you think - ever heard of Moore's law? cuz I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.

YEAH MAN - OF COURSE I AM!

Again - imagination can be a wonderful thing. :D

Don't you think that overclocking your hardware just to get a higher benchmark is just a little 'sad' ?

is a few hundred points worth the risk?

Ah! - of course it is! - that's why I see so many burn't out Clevo's coming into my shop for repair :D

Good for business I suppose :)
