Is it better to just buy the updated ram and harddrive you want with purchase or ask for no ram and harddrive and then find a good reputable brand that you know that will also be cheaper? For example, to upgrade from 1gb ram to 2gb is about $70-100, but if I could buy 2gb ram myself I could get it under $100 and save on getting a discount when buying no ram to begin with. The same for the harddrive; if I bought my own and ordered a notebook without harddrive I could be saving $50-100.

Is it worth saving the $100-250? I guess maybe it depends on the discount they would give when buying no ram/harddrive? Is it easy to install a new harddrive/ram in Sager notebooks?

Do you know if either xoticpc or PowerNotebooks sells notebooks without the harddive and/or ram? I'm wondering if anyone has ever got the SAGER NP2090 or SAGER NP5791 without ram/harddrive. I will be e-mailing the companies, but wanted to check here also to see what people think.

    Thank you for any thoughts.

rjtech and istnc both sell barebones clevo/sager notebooks. I was going to go that route but when most of the vendors lowered the price on 5791 recently it was actually cheaper for me just to buy through xotic. I did however stick with 2 gb of ram and then bought 4gb off of newegg. Since the upgrade to 4gb was 150 from xotic and you can buy 2x2GB sticks off of newegg for maybe a few bucks more and have the 2gbs to sell or give to a friend. Just my 2 cents.

Ok cool. Are both rjtech and istnc reputable resellers? I looked at both sites, but its seems that neither offer the same specs as buying a NP2090 or NP5791 without the harddrive/ram and the warranty doesn't seem as good.

From looking at xoticpc is looks like if they will sell without the ram/harddrive it's possible to get the NP2090 for around 160$ cheaper and the NP5791 maybe $260 cheaper.

If they will sell without ram/harddrive is something like this worth doing?

I bought my 5791 from XoticPC, which arrived today. I was replacing a dead5760 from that was about 1.5 years old which had JUST had received a new 200GB/7200rpm drive. I was able to purchace my new 5791 *without* RAM and a hard drive. All I did was drop in the old drive and RAM and away I went; well after about 30 Vista driver updates :)

Ok cool. I emailed xotic asking if they did this and what the price would be for NP2090 and NP5791 without ram and harddrive but haven't heard back yet. Good to know that they will do this though. I'm thinking this may be the route to go =)

    Thank you for posting.

Bought my notebook from RJTECH, without ram or hard drives, everything went without a hitch.

Installed my own RAM & hard drives myself. I must say, it was pretty straight forward, installed the OS, got my SLI fix from Richard Wu @ RJTECH & everything was up & running perfectly.

I'll never buy a DELL notebook again, as long as I live, RIP DELL XPS (1st Gen).

I also purchased my D901C from RJTech without drive, ram [or CPU for that matter]. All told, I ended up saving a pretty significant amount of money off of how much it was going to cost [I put in a 200GB drive, 4 GB ram].

RJTech is also good because they offer free shipping -- which sure does help out. Also, if you have a buddy in another state [and you are in Cali] you can do the whole ship to another state and back again and save a few hundred dollars on tax.

Ok, well I got an e-mail back from xoticPC. It turned out that the cheapest solution is buying the upgrades and everything you want straight from the company. I worked out all the possibilities and the cheapest price would be buying straight from xotic with everything I want.

    Here was the breakdown:

    For NP5791:
Buy without RAM + HD, purchase my own RAM + HD: Cost ~$1866
Buy base model, sell RAM + HD, purchase my own RAM + HD: Cost ~$1886
Buy upgrades and everything at reseller: Cost ~$1849

    For NP2090:
Buy without RAM + HD, purchase my own RAM + HD: Cost ~$1418
Buy base model, sell RAM + HD, purchase my own RAM + HD: Cost ~$1398
*Buy upgrades and everything at reseller + 1gb ram extra: Cost ~$1447
*On this one, I would not upgrade to 2gb on the site and buy 2gb on newegg which would be 3gb for only slightly more than the other options (so still is best price).

As you can see, it's cheaper to buy from the reseller with upgrades. The price without ram/HD at least from xoticPC is not enough price discount to be able to purchase your own for cheaper.

The discounts currently at powernotebooks and xoticPC makes it cheaper to order there than at RJtech right now.

Now I just can't decide between the NP2090 and NP5791 lol

yep i went with a barebones from xotic and after all the price drops now i wish i wouldhave waited it would have only been 42$ more to have everything i have now already come installed in the system right from the start. but yes xotic does sell barebones they just dont advertise it.
