    forget reading for a minute... have you actually tried it out to see? probably not.
    as for sli..it was meant for the games point of view and not the app based portion, since we are pointing things out. they also state 2005 - 2007 autocad (this is before they figured out about the dep work around) would not work with vista, but it did and does. (called work arounds) just because you read it doesn't make it so.
    example: Sager has confirmed with Clevo that the M860TU will not support 44W+ processors or the 9800M GTX because of the thermal budget!
    but yet it's possible and does work.

    quit looking to the literal all the time. it's a very long list of what people say wont work and yet there are a bunch of people around here proving them wrong.

    Well the posts were just to for readers to confirm what my collegues, professional designers in my company tell me about SLI and designers tools such as the ones you mentioned. Simply 0 benefit ATM!!!!.

    Your writing suggests otherwise. You start by stating "You will miss a lot" this counterposing what I've written statint "you won't miss a thing" referring to the need of the second card. You then went on and on about how valid a second card was giving examples of professional apps using it.

    Now your QX9650 is really doing the work. As I understand you updated the CPU not long ago so maybe your that is what is giving the impression of improved performance due to the second video card, but it is not.

    Anyway, I will not discuss this at all. There is a lot of info about this on the net, just don't take my word for it.

    Take for instance DVDShrink that you mentioned is mainly CPU!!!!. It might take advantage of the decoding facilities of one card but not two. This since drivers don't allow decoding using multiple cards! But I suspect that this particular software is not even using the cards to decode and shrink the bits and bytes

    sorry for the confusion. meaning more about gaming than application useage

    you keep pointing out my cpu upgrade, but i had a q9550 at first. not a whole lot of difference there.

    im sure they're is, but if i did that with everyone, then i wouldn't be getting paid for finding solutions.:)

    and this last one...pretty much all encoding or trans coding of files is done by the cpu, while a better or more video cards allow you to utilize more monitors at higher resolutions.

    one of the main reasons for going quad. thought this was well known.
    |Don't jump on the example's as if they were topic's|

    Sorry I can't interpret what you state above as you explained. But as you are the author I take that you have wrote was not mirroring your thoughts.

    Anyway, for my opinion about the cost / benfit of this mobile video cards in SLI is already stated in several posts. Different people have different thoughts about it.

    Happy new year to everyone, just posted to clarify a piece of info.

    PS: Sorry for the miss understading, but I think is understandable :).

    easy test for you:
    open up autocad/photoshop/illustrator/dvdshrink heck, even internet explorer.

    shrink the window just small enough to fit on the screen. now take it from the corner of the screen and move it around the screen real fast. tell me if it stutters or does it move smooth. with single 8600s and 8700s it did not move smooth and the window sort of jumps and the video is like 1 second behind (dvdshrink) windows shrink and rise slower as well with lower end cards. also, there is no sli on 8600's.(8600 gs)

    also, i say i ran test, never said it benefited from it just like you neglected to mention about using 8600's or 8700's. think your getting a bit beside yourself.

    on topic:
    bottom line get the second card. (just like trance has 2. he didn't even follow his own suggestion) the old ways are the old days.

    I have SLI disabled in mine for most games due to reasons discussed in another thread. So much I sometimes to forget to turn it on.

    "me if it stutters or does it move smooth"

    I have ran CPU intesive programs (such as some CPU Benchmark tools) while moving really fast any windows on the screen. No stutter.

    By the way, I use Vista and its WM (Windows Manager) does not use more then one card to render the desktop. In other words, it does not support SLI. So the second cards does nothing. So the proposed test over the Windows Manager (moving windows really fast) does not benefit from a second card in anyway whatsoever.

    What really makes a diff, are three things:

    * HDD Speed
    * Video Card RAM
    * CPU
    * Video Card Speed
    * PC RAM

    The first may sound strange but excessive IO to disk can draw the windows desktop to a stall and its the primary culprit of desktop stutter. Now, our beasts have RAID with symetrical read write (RAID 0, double the speed), usually lots of RAM (mine 4GB) and our cards have lots of RAM too (512 or more) so hardely that becomes a problem, even when doing for instance HDD speed tests while moving the windows really fast (try it). CPU speed is always important, but Quads are excelent multitaskers so the desktop is still very responsive even when multiple apps are running. Plenty of RAM is good as it reduces IO (the OS caches data on RAM) and reduces the nees to se Virtual RAM (RAM stored on disk).

    My dad as a M570RU with a 8700M GT. His desktop is less responsive then mine in certain situations due to reason pointed above, not due to the fact that I have a second card even when SLI disabled! Overall the d901c is simply much more powerful and that shows on the Windows Desktop too wether one has one or two cards.

    Anyway it seams that we agree that the d901c is excelent for work, especially work that requires this kind of power and mobility. We just disagree on the usefulness of the second card even for games.

    If anyone wants to buy my second 8700M GT feel free to PM me :)

    Have fun,

    Trance
    PS: Plenty of RAM, good IO Cache (disk cache and speed etc etc) and fast BUS is what makes the desktop so responsive.

    nah, we basically agree...just the in between is all..lol
    very well explained.
    to make things even easier. second card is better for "most" gaming "not all" and very little benefit to most main line applications.
    is probably how i should have brought it across from the start. my explanation was more on a vague side of things as i read back over it.

    I add, SLI on lappies gives NO BENEFIT to 100% of business, design and development apps at the moment. Very little benefit for most multimedia apps (99%). Benefits most games, but still the only thing that improves is resolution (higher resolution) by one to 1.5 traces up (say 1600x1200 to 1900x1200), hardly noticible on a 17" screen (that is why most 17" gaming LCDs don't support 1900x1200 res) IMHO.

    Now if you were going to display/play your game on a 40" (or more) FULL HD (1080p native res with no upscale) then SLI on a lappy is to be considered. But you should also consider that it is very short lived ability (say less 12 months at most) and for that matter either a desktop or a console is far more adequate and cheap to keep, especially the later.

    But has someone has said, if one has extra money with little idea where to spend it then go for it. At least one will gather experience.

    Due to problems with credit card, I'll be ordering the laptop next Monday instead. I've just gotten in doubt again about the ram. :confused:

    I do have the money to get 6 gb (1x4, 1x2) ram instead of 4 gb (2x2), which's around 350 dollars, but I'm just in doubt if it's worth it?
    I'm mainly thinking that since I already have some "overkill" things, such as 3.0 ghz quad processor and two 9800m GTX cards, it'd be a waste not to get a lot of ram too. The ram is DDR2 by the way.
    Also, I know that it's (more or less) easy to install a new hard drive in the D901C, but is this the same with ram? Would it be possible to buy a 4 gb ram card later and replace one of the 2 gb ones? Would it be cheaper?

    Any suggestions? :confused:

    Unfortunately it is true. Mainstream design software such as AutoCad, Photoshop etc etc, although they state that support SLI cards, they don't support SLI per si (that is two cards processing the same surface rendering the image faster). In other words the only benefit of the second card is the ability to use more monitors and display it higher resolutions. Unlike SLI that we know of, that not only does that but improves performance in frame rendering (FPS) at higher resolutions).

    There are software thought that make use of it, but very very few, mostly used in industrial design that cost 10 times more what you payed for the video card. Furthermore they support double professional vide cards (like Quadro), not mainstream SLI made of gaming cards such as the 9800M GTX.

    Anyway take it as you wish. It is not so easy to conclude that double the card then improved performance everywhere. The "professional" video cards arena is an entirely different ball game.

    By the way, usually when I'm going for overkill solutions, I go all the way as I can and forget about money as the point is not at all about benefit but about potential abilityb (even if it does not materialize). So if you need 6GB now why not? For instance you can use it to run more Virtual Machines.

    Have fun.

    yeah, one quadro (M) card at 128 cuda sp's would be better at design than two sli gtx's for sure. that's what it's designed for. (multi monitors and super high res excluded from this)(only for full effect purposes)
