So I was looking to buy a gaming laptop for my younger brother and my eyes fell on the Alienware m15x.I placed an order for that but after hearing about all the problems which Eurpean customers are facing with their m15x, I lost confidence in Alienware and cancelled the order. I received a refund on Friday. I own a XPS M1730 myself and so my brother does not want another XPS in the house. So now we are looking to buy either a np9262 or a np5793 from either Rock or Kobalt in UK.Battery life is not that important as it is going to be on my brother's desk most of the time,
Firstly I would like to know how does the build quality of the np9262 compare to that of the np5793.I know it is kind of a vague question but which one do you think is built better.
Secondly, should I purchase the machine from Rock or Kobalt? I have heard there were some severe delays with recent Rock orders .However they have been operating for a long time.Whereas Kobalt is a relatively new company in terms of laptops(I heard that they have doing desktops for quite some time).I did contact them last week and Neil from Kobalt was patient enough to answer all my questions.I also find that both Andrew and Neil are very active in Kobalt forums and they do answer to customer questions quite quickly on the forums. But I am not sure how their support is as they are quite new.
Any advice on these two points is greatly appreciated.Thanks.
P.S-I would like to buy the laptop from the UK and not from overseas.Thanks.

Both are good vendors... although Rock is slighty more expensive.
Also check out www.novatech.co.uk -
Thanks Gophn.I did check out novatech but they don't do the np 9262 which is one of my choices. Can anyone please compare the build qualities of the two.
-
Rock is way cheaper, has a standard 3 year collect and return warranty and, in my opinion, is a more established Clevo reseller.
Goph, check the prices. -
I think was remembering about the prices for the D900C from Rock.
-
The prices for the M571RU-U are way way way cheaper than before. They finally woke up.
The prices for the D901C are indeed expensive, very expensive. But you can get the D901C, in the first configuration Rock has, without a second card for less than 2000 pounds. -
For the D901C (9262) kobalt is the cheapest. The difference for my configuration was about 1000 pounds! (no mistype there) If it is about the price go with Kobalt and if they all components in stock you get it in few days. Kobalt is also offering 3 years collect and return warranty, for the moment is for free.

I have a rock laptop and their after sales service is brilliant. Even though it was slightly more expensive than the competition, it was definately worth the extra money. If I were you I would go for the Rock.
-
What kind of extra service can they provide for almost a 1000 pounds? Besides that they do not put the 45 nm processors. When you check the prices be sure you it includes the VAT.
-
Sorry guys it took me a while to reply.Let me configure the 3 machines, np5793,np9262(single card) and np9262(dual card) and see how the prices come up.
Other than that guys, can any of you please comment on the build quality of the two.I know I have said this the 3rd time now but the thing is I hve never seen any of these laptops and have no idea what the build quality is like. -
my 770 Xtreme (5793) is .. well .. rock solid
-
Well the Xtreme SL8 at Rock(np 9262) is way more expensive than the Comanche SLI at Kobalt(again np9262) for the same specifications and both offer 3 year warranty. However the np 9262(Xtreme SL8) at Rock doesn't have the 45 nm Q9450 processor.
The Xtreme 770(np 5793) at Rock is cheaper than the MojaveXI( np 5793) at Kobalt for the specs I want. -
-
-
I had some bad luck, because the q9450 is not shipping as fast as it should. So I had to wait some time. After they got the procs about a week + shipping.
-
One other thing to note is that Kobalt has a dedicated member on our forums, which Rock Does not have. That is defintely a plus if you need to contact them on the weekends or something.
As for the m57ru, the one from Rizeon is the cheapest. Rizeon also has a member on this forum.
If your getting a d901c, go with kobalt -
I would also recomand kobalt for the D901C.
-
Rock is a tad too expensive.
I`d choose Kobalt. -
I am now leaning towards the D901c.This is way cheaper at Kobalt as I have previously mentioned. Now to find out from Neil whether they have all the components in stock and how long it would take them to ship.
-
If you want the D901C get it from Kobalt, otherwise Rock is the best solution (currently).

Can't recommend Kobalt highly enough. Got my 901C with the q9550 on Friday.
Superb piece of kit. Build quality is A1 especially considering they painted it for me so it's been in bits etc.
Bit of a delay in shipping because intel are being a bit slow with q9550's. Andrew and Neil have been excellent in keeping me informed and giving me options during the build. Definitely recommend them! -
hey thanks for the comment on Kobalt.Could I ask you 3 things:
1.) how long exactly did it take yours to ship?
2.) do you have a restart problem with the machine(as in after pressing restart, the machine just powers down and does not 'restart'.).
3.) Also do you have to pay the price on the website or are do they offer any sort of discounts?
cheers!! -
The restart problem seems to be related to the BIOS that suports q9450 and it is random. Some builts have it and some not. The q6600 and q6700 probably do not have this problem, but I think using q9450 at a cost lower than the q6700 outweights the energy spent to push the power button for 5 seconds
.
Related to shipping time, if they have you would get it in a week I think. Check their forum http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=98
Based on my (short) experience I can say only good things. -
thanks pasoleatis.I read you have the 'restart' problem and I also pm'd Neil from Kobalt about it.He did reply and explained the thing to me.However I was wanting to know whether the issue existed for wayneski.
-
Sorry for the delayed reply. They actually expected me to do some work!!!
Anyway yes unfortunately I do have this restart problem. Neil and Andrew warned me about it before delivery. It's not really a problem for me to be honest (but yeah I want it fixed!) just got to remember when installing stuff to say no to restart and shut it down manually and then switch it back on. The damn thing starts up so bloody quick (spesh after following the tweak guide on here in the OS section) that the extra second gained from the computer doing it for you isn't noticed.
It goes into standby/sleep no worries. Just not checked hiberbation yet as been too busy playing all games at full chat! What a machine!! Looks the dogs too with the paintjob. -
oops sorry missed out a couple of answers.
Shipping. I placed my order 20th march and received friday just gone.
Yes it was a really long time, but not really the kobalt guys fault. The processors are as rare as rockhorse Sh1~ at the moment and everyone seems to be struggling here in good old blighty to get hold of them. Anyway the processors were in on Monday of last week andI got it (hand delivered no less) on Friday.
Would have been sooner, but we were trying something with painting the lid and losing the badge which didn't quite work out.
I pretty much paid the sticker price for the unit ( much less than rock at the same spec even with painting) but due to the delays we came to an arrangement. -
Thanks a lot wayneski. You answered all the questions I had regarding the machine.Cheers!
