Buying a GTX 1070 laptop (P650HS-G)

I've been wanting to buy a GTX 1070 laptop and after all my research the Clevo P650HS-G seems to be my best bet with its great reviews, performance, thermals, support and whatnot! I will be buying this laptop next month at most from HIDevolution (EVOC). My main uses will be student work, gaming (duh!), movies and sometimes light x265 video encoding.

Here's the specs I've chosen (rest being default)-
120Hz display
2x8GB RAM @ 2400MHz
250GB Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD

I have a few queries I'd like the answers to and was hoping anyone here would help me with them.
- Since gaming and x265 encoding will be the most that the laptop will be stressed so will the IC Diamond be fine in keeping my load temp target of ~70°C? I've seen HTWingNut's review of this model with the beefier i7-7820HK CPU and this seems easily achievable.
- Based on my usage, for temps I'll underclock the CPU by -110mV so I wouldn't probably need the Prema BIOS and therefore will the Clevo Control Center be enough? Or can I get even more with Prema for other tweaks?
- @Phoenix are there some other tweaks to the laptop that you would suggest to get the most out of it? Apart from your GREAT Windows 10 guide?
- Lastly, are there going to be some great deals to consider for this laptop in the near future?

I think the 60 Hz IPS screen is a better option than the 120 Hz TN screen. I have the 120 Hz screen and the colors changing with the viewing angle is distracting. Clevo is probably going to release the PA50 matching the new PA70 in the future. The biggest advantage is TB3.

 

This could be a more distant future than it might seem

 

Do you notice much blurring with the TN Bruno?

I have the IPS, and there is noticeable blurring of textures with movement. Not obvious ghosting, just a smearing.

I have no idea how much better the TN would be.

 

The screen has no blurring at all. The ufo test is flawless. I dislike the color shifting and a horizontal line in flat and dark backgrounds that I attribute to uneven back lightning. Both these issues disappear when actually playing. You only notice on the desktop or internet browsing, with vector images.

 

@bruno.uy I don't really mind the viewing angles of the TN panel. And I've also wanted to try a higher refresh rate before an IPS panel.

@Donald@HIDevolution I am going to be ordering the laptop in the next couple of weeks and I wanted to know if I can make a small request like removing the stickers except the "GeForce GTX" and "Intel Core i7" one.

 

If you like to tweak and want to get 120 Hz easy get HK and overclock it to 4 or more. However if you go for HK buy it from Prema partner because stock BIOS is crap when it comes to OC. For now Prema didn't released his BIOS but he probably will. (I had previous gen with his BIOS and it really improved laptop stability).

 

What temps are you getting under intensive load? I've been thinking about getting the same clevo with the same specs.

 

CPU around 85-90 usually (CPU cannot maintain 4 GHz OC damn power and curent limits)... and GPU 78 C deg. TG Kryonaut paste and i lapped a heatsink a little. Go for 7820HK

 

I was about to get the same laptop but I decided to just wait for Intel 8th gen notebook CPUs that will be coming out in January.

P.S. I am so very sorry @Donald@HIDevolution that I haven't confirmed my order yet I'm just so anxious with new stuff right around the corner.

I think that only plausible option for SKL/KBL + 1070 users is to wait for 8th gen + 2070/Volta/???

 

Well, it ALWAYS pays off to wait for new tech, even if it's to get last gen tech at reduced prices.

 

Not always, being at the start of a new gen of GPUs typically gives the machine the longest life span, see GTX 680, 980 and 1080 machines.
