CLEVO Drivers Update Utility by OBSIDIAN-PC

Functions of the app:
It will check the drivers installed in your system and compare them to the ones in the OBSIDIAN-PC server.
The app will generate a list of all running .sys and then use that information to check the drivers version. This way it will make a proper detection.
When using the .sys version the driver version might be different then the one you are used to read, sometimes drivers are referred using the package number and not actual driver version. For instance, the NVIDIA package 378.49 contains the driver 21.21.13.7849 (nvlddmkm.sys). This should make no difference to you

Some drivers do not have running services or actual .sys drivers, so to detect those the app will look at the Windows Registry and in other cases it will look for the driver install dir and check the .inf file.

When the app detects a new version it will enable the "update" button for that driver, you just click and the app downloads it, unpacks it and starts the install process.

Some drivers require two steps to update properly, it´s the case of Control Center. The app knows this, and will trigger a uninstall, ask you to reboot and then instead of "update" it will show you a "resume" option. In the future more drivers might have this two step install.

One Click Install:
One Click Install was designed for those who just installed windows and want a fast unattended way of setting up the unit.
It will download a complete set of drivers and trigger a install script to install them all in a go.
Please not that the One Click Install package might not be as updated as the individual packages. One Click package is generated once a week by a cron task in the server.
Also, One Click does not include Wireless drivers.


Current Settings:
-App lives in the windows system tray
-You can toggle - Start with Windows
-You can toggle - Notify Updates - Uses windows system notifications to notify you of driver updates
-You can select a timer for automatically check for updates
-Keep a local copy of the drivers installer - If selected "yes" it will keep a copy of the latest driver version in the folder "drivers" inside the app dir, if selected "no" it will delete the installer after installing the driver.



Stuff you should know:
The app does not store any information (garbage) in your Windows Registry
The app never asks for administrator privileges (what might ask you for that is the drivers installers).
You can move the app folder anywhere you want, the only feature that might break is the "Start with Windows" option - if you move folder, just deselect that option and re-select it, voila, done, new startup shortcut created.
When a new app version comes out you will be able to update it by going to the "about" tab, it will trigger it´s own auto-updater.
The app includes dpi awareness instructions so it can scale up when you have high resolution screens or use the Windows Visualization Scaling Options


Modded Control Center
When you install control center using this app you are actually using a modified control center that will not install the XTU service hence disabling the CPU_RAM_OC software. If you want to tune up your laptop just use ThrottleStop like all the cool kids are doing.


Version Mismatch from CLEVO Website
So you went to the CLEVO website and noticed they have a more recent driver version, ignore that, most of the times the version number is not correct at CLEVO website. If you want to test it just download it from the CLEVO website, install it and re-run the app to check which "installed version" does it detect. If the app detects that you are running a more recent version then the one in OBSIDIAN server it will change the button to "Ahead". When you install a driver that will show you "Ahead" you should reply in this thread and notify John about that.


Recent might not be the best
Some drivers have specific settings/changes for specific models, so sometimes updating it without using the app will get you in trouble. In the past the Audio driver was one of those, you could install a recent version that you downloaded somewhere but then it would break Sound Blaster software or a speaker like the subwoofer would stop working.
Same goes for Control Center, each model does have a specific version for a reason.
Using the app will keep you in the safe about all this.


Other Features for future Release:
-Performance Tuning, a work possible with the use of the ThrottleStop app, a collaboration with TS Developer.
-BIOS Updates - We are still deciding if we will allow EC/BIOS flash under windows, as Anti-Virus software might brick the process / laptop, another option is just make the app notify you of bios updates and setup a USB pen for you.
-Will be adding more useful software to the tab "others" like Directx and MS Runtime Frameworks, both needed by some games or applications or even drivers.

Free Goodies / Replacement for Control Center
There used to be a free license for the Updater Software, it was supposed to be an exclusive NBR license. Unfortunately it was shared on various online social websites and some resellers were even sending their laptops with it for their clients.
This caused our server to be in constant high load, making the service slow for everyone.
We then decided to remove the free license, in return we are making other pieces of software that are free:

Control Station
It will be the software to go to open all the other software we are making.
It was made with a simple intention, create an alternative to Control Center.
At the moment we are doing the CPU Tuning tab and then we will add GPU switch option and Power Modes.
This is still VERY beta so be careful with it.

Keyboard LED
We haven't even "really started" this one, at the moment its just a quick solution for those who are already using their laptops without Control Center.

I think it will run in W7. But will only download W10 drivers, that will probably work with W7. But I think you would be better served with W10

 

It´s already hard enough to keep it updated for Windows 10 only, if i add another operating system i will probably go crazy!
But i think 90% of the drivers should also work with windows 7.

 

I actually wanted for Windows 8.1, not 7. I like 8.1/10 improvements over 7. I dislike 10's tendency to reset things and have its own way, as well as the plethora of bugs and things that break on update (and the OS needs to update).

8.1 is my desire. As far as I can tell, you tune it with Start 8 and maybe a couple other optimizations and it's better for multitasking usage than 7, has more control than 10, and games as well as both of them.

 

Maybe I can convince you when the W10 Game mode is released

I recon that W10 takes a bit more time to configure, but I think is better suited than any other previous version.

 

What´s Windows 10 Game mode?

Finally i managed to get a way for my app to read .dll files version.
Now chipset will be detected!!!! Finally 100% installed version detected!
Now making a rule for SBCinema / SBX X-FI -> the N850HK uses SBCinema so i need a new set of rules just for that sucker.
New update should be available tomorrow!

 

Initial Windows 10 Game Mode benchmarks disappoint

@J.S. well I remember seeing P751ZM showing up in the drop down list of laptops, so I would say it is pretty safe.

@Phoenix you said in your op that you and @John@OBSIDIAN-PC are thinking about letting the tool make a usb pen for BIOS update. Out of curiosity, and it might be a bit off a noob question, what exactly would be the advantage of updating the BIOS using a usb stick rather than within windows itself (presuming that anti virus et al are not going to be a problem)? Is motherboard less like to go kaput during BIOS update done through usb route?

Im doing my BIOS versions as we speak, our store website does have a fórum and theres a section called BIOS developement. Only N240BU at the moment, but if you look at the package, inside theres a DOS version, a EFI version and a Windows version. These are the 3 ways of flashing a BIOS.
What i would really like is that my app would automate the thing, to reboot, start EFI mode and flash, but this would mean messing with windows boot manager, sounds too much trouble.

Doing things in windows is dangerous, antivirus might kill your unit, no matter how many safe steps i add... So im stil thinking about it.
Also, im sorry to say that 99% of users here should NOT flash the BIOS versions im releasing or you might be in trouble with warranty void.
For people who are not our clients maybe i can add a "select BIOS file" browser, you chose your vendor BIOS file and the app will do the rest, just an idea.

Im just doing too many things at the same time... I think Tomorrow i will finish the drivers section and finally will be able to dedicate my time to performance and BIOS tabs
I love the performance tab... I cant wait to dive in!

Only one bechmark... and a not very reliable one.
Still, I don't expect miracles. But even a small performance bump would be great.

FINALLY the app also checks chipset version! So now we have 100% capacity to detect install versions.
The app now knows that models like the N850/N870 uses SBCinema and not XFI, the app will work according to it

BIOS Tab - Under development, please ignore it, i am still working on it, and after reading about other vendor concerns, until i think of a better solution this tab will be exclusive for OBSIDIAN-PC laptops, and even for those it does not work at the moment!! Chill and wait
Please, before bashing me because of eventual "obsidian" closed features, keep in mind that a bad bios will brick your unit and you will void your warranty if you flash my bios on other vendors laptop. Please respect this decision as it is a "delicate" matter. I´m all about keeping it open, but we are a community and i do need to address this with great caution. I don´t want anyone to damage the laptop and i do not want any vendor to be concerned with the damage this app could do!

Future Performance tab will be fully open for everyone from the start.

 

Maybe a notification that a new bios is available, would be handy for now. That way the end user would have to request from the vendor (at least till you finish working on it).

 

Just updated the app, it seems to be working alright though there is an issue with the Killer 1535 LAN driver. Installation starts and then almost immediately i get an error message saying device not found.

I reversed the realtek audio driver to an older version as suggested per Utility but this time the soundblaster doesn´t recognize the audiodevice .Registry clean ,install,uninstall,deactivate,update to the recent version doesn´t help at all.Any suggestions ?

I think there might now be two different killer lans, the one in the P870km1 might be new and i think im using that driver for all.

Clevo P775dm3-g.I made a fresh windows install one week ago with your app ,audio driver was "ahead" .

Everything worked fine but then i came across this thread where you said:

So i installed the older version and this happened Maybe i shouldn´t change a running system ;-) my fault

 

No worries ill check it out and report.
Usually the app uses same drivers for all models but some i just use the ones at clevo website and i use the one for each model.
Drivers like that are:
Audio
SBX
Control Center - although modded for no xtu

So probably the latest from clevo website are buggy or i messed up uploading it.

You can try the SBX and Audio from Clevo website and report?

Re-Uploaded Audio and SBX drivers just to be sure, these have to work on the P775DM3.
When i get to work tomorrow i will try them in my own system.

Neat little utility you made. I found a possible bug. I have the version of Clevo Control Center installed that's appropriate for my system. However, your program is reporting it differently and gives the option to update. And apparently there are a couple instances of the program running even though I only have one window. See the following screenshot, including the system tray:

 

Regarding the SBX app - it was not working for me, even after a reinstall. It gave an error message on start and then closed. Here is how I fixed it.

Delete the "avatar" folder and start the SBX app, it will re-create the folder and all the .pngs inside it. The problem was that the .png files inside were corrupt.

You are running clevo version with xtu service.
Force update with the app and it will remove that version and install the modded version without xtu.
Use throttlestop if you need to undervolt.

 

I don't know if this is a bug or a feature. I had my LAN devices disabled and the Obsidian app reports that the drivers are not installed.

Btw, look at the temps at stock settings Blue ones are GPU temps and green one is CPU.

I reinstalled minutes ago the audio driver with the older version from the app and SBX works again

But somehow it says its the recent version .but anyway it works ,thank you again for your fabulous work .

And big thanks at the forum with tips like undervolting ,cpu delidding and most updated Bios versions.Even my Reseller didn´t have them.My Laptop is finally after 6 months quite and cool and without throttling.

I disabled the XTU components through the oem.ini file before installing CCC. Is there another check you can run to see if the service is actually running/present?

Ahhh perfect then dont mind the app version report.
Its just that i clean the version number in that same OEM.ini your just has the stock dirty long name hahaha

When installing updated versions of the tool is it necessary to uninstall/delete the previous or just install over the old tool? Also if I want to use the CCC version through the tool do I uninstall the current sager version and then install the one from your awesome update tool? Thx

I figured it out. I just hit the update button within the program and it updated itself. This tool is awesome, thank you for providing such a wonderful service to us!

Some drivers need a uninstall first.
I already setup a bunch of code for those steps, the best example is the Control Center.
The app will look for it, and if it is installed it will first start an uninstall process, when it finishes it will ask you to reboot. After you reboot if you open the app it will know that there is a pending install and will show "Resume" button.
At the moment i only use those steps for Control Center, BUT if you guys find out another driver that needs to uninstall / reboot / install please let me know so i can add the same steps to that driver.

Clevo Control Center for P870KM:
The latest version is 5.0001.1.10 and this is what came pre-installed. However, the drivers folder contains an older version 5.0001.1.07. I tried the option Redownload all drivers and it's the same.
I tried downloading 1.10 from Clevo's website. Now I understand Phoenix's frustration lol. It says 8 hours left ... zzz
