I got a new laptop in March and paid the license for Fan Control - money was taken but key doesn't work. No response from store support, no response from John on here. So the project is well and truly dead, don't buy any new licenses, and good luck getting it to work if you get a new machine.
-
I did hack the binary a while back to make it work in these situations. I did make this available before, given proof of a license (e.g. invoice); I can do the same again, I guess. That seems to be ethical without violating John's copyright. Send me a PM if this would be something you would need.

Hello everyone, I got a CLEVO laptop earlier this year, and am very frustrated with its poor fan control. I came across the Obsidian fan control program and this forum thread explaining that new licenses are no longer really working, but I thought I'd try buying one anyway, reasoning that if it didn't work I could then PM philstopford for his workaround.
So weirdly the Obsidian site lets you register an account and put in an order for the software license, but then says it's on hold until you pay them. I've paid Obsidian with a bank transfer (I have invoice proof of this.), but then things haven't updated further.
So I thought I'd try registering here and messaging philstopford with my proof of purchase, but have now found out that I can't PM other users until I've made "five quality posts".
I only registered here to try and get this fan software working, so I don't want to go around spamming threads in a vain attempt to improve my forum status. Do you folks have any suggestions? Can someone send a PM to me, even if I can't start a conversation myself?
I'm sadly not that great with computers, so wouldn't be able to replicate philstopford's workaround myself.
EDIT: philstopford quickly messaged me after I posted this, and gave me access to the altered program. I'll try it out later when I have a free moment, and hopefully will work fine for me.Last edited: Dec 27, 2021joluke likes this. -
Good evening everyone. I have created this account just to be able to reply to this thread and especially to shine some light on the quote from @mhp32 .
The software from Rem0o's repository looks very promising and feature a plugin system. I am not a programmer myself, but I still did try to make a DLL following the instructions on the repository, and taking the Dell plugin as an example, but failed loading it into the software. I inspired myself (read "copied bits") from the code from @djsubtronic in order to let the plugin detect ClevoEcInfo.dll and load the functions, but even the first pointer is equal to IntPtr.Zero. That is as far as I can go, because it makes 15 years I haven't really coded anything serious. A little victory for myself that I had something building at least
I believe this would be a good idea to make a plugin for this sotfware as the only problem would be to interface the plugin with what you have all succeed to do so far. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the UI, as this software already handles it, neither of the curves, or whatever triggers to set up to modify the fan speed, as the software handles it. And the author of this repo would probably maintain (or at least help maintain) the plugin as it is written in the readme:
There are a few videos on youtube that shows what the software is able to do. I believe I have found the channel of Rem0o, but the videos are pretty long for a quick preview.
Here are a few quick links that could help:
the repo (again): https://github.com/Rem0o/FanControl.Releases
the wiki about plugins: https://github.com/Rem0o/FanControl.Releases/wiki/Plugins
one of the plugin for inspiration (Dell plugin): https://github.com/Rem0o/FanControl.DellPlugin
youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCClIDYAEncCD9d-Kmxumj3A
Im sure one of you could crack it in no time
Finally, I would like to ensure this whole message is interpreted as a suggestion. I understand this could be fun to develop your own software. I also understand this is done on free time and stuff already provided is already more than we could all expect. I also would like to apologize for the wall of text, but I really hope I tickled your curiosity enough so one of you try to develop said plugin.
Respectfully yours,

@RandomObsidianUser I already saw this repo some time ago and tried to mess around with it/get it to work with my laptop but didn't have a lot of success. I don't think there was a plugin system at the time, so maybe if I can find some spare time I will take another look at it. Meanwhile you are free to use my code if you like to try yourself.

@djsubtronic I have already tried but completely failed. The log from Rem0o's soft would tell me it wasn't able to locate ClevoEcInfo.dll, despite pointing in the right location (because your code did the job). Im sure I have done something wrong, but I dont know why. If you do not want to start from scratch with that plugin, I could possibly send you what I have already done... At least, it compiles
I just dont know how to send you that though. -
Good afternoon, help me figure out how to activate the Obsidian Fan Control license! After changing the bios firmware, it was necessary to support new video cards, it is now not activated! In support, I wrote there silence with an answer!

hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
So i have purchased the software and things was looking good however during some gaming the system just powered down and refused to power back on after.
Has anyone had issues like this as running all the benchmarks i normally do to check if anything has been damaged due to my OC stint comes back OK.
Temps was 75c on CPU, 69.2c on GPU Hot point 62.5c on GPU Core, my ram was 62c as well. Check the event log and nothing showed up there so trying to pin point what cause the shutdown is going to be hard.
Apart from the ram being upgrade the Fan control software is the only other thing that has changed. -

Edit: @joluke I did adjust the Emergency Max fan setting and still had Clevo's fan control software on Auto. System has been stable and i was playing the same game i was playing when it decided to power off.Last edited: Jan 9, 2022
