    Hello.

I just wanted to start a new thread because my sager np5797 is in sager tech support because of overheating problems.

my idle temps in vista never go down of 43°C and playing wow, crysis and grid the gtx 280m reach 105°C.

i´ve never overclocked the gpu. i dont like to play with those very expensive parts

my room temp is 25°C .

right now sager tech support told me that my laptop doesn´t have any overheating problems because 99°C is fine for the gtx 280m. i think that sager is wrong.

when i told them that some owners have idle temps of 34°C they laughed about it and they told me "thats imposibble, 44°C idle is fine".

i have 44°C idle temps even with my fans set on max so i know that there is something wrong about it. i use nvidia´s 186.03 from their website.

Please CLEVO USERS post screenshots to prove sager that they are wrong.

    Thank you very much.

Well I have a 9800m gtx so that doesn't really help you but I would say anything over 95°C for a long period of time Is gonna be trouble for the card and it probably as won't last long.

Is your card downclocking at all when its reaching 105? Not sure what the automatic downclock settings are with the newer nvidia cards.

My card will usually idle around 48 - 52. Its at 52 right now with no gaming and with fans at normal bios settings. However even with these idle temps, I and can play crysis, l4d etc. and the max temp I reach will usually be around 89 with fans high.

When was the last time you cleaned out the dust inside your laptop?

To me your idle temps don't seem that bad, but gaming at 99°C is terrible so hopefully the other 280m guys can help you out.

If Sager's tech support is being an *** and telling you "105C under heavy load is fine lolz!", you may want contact your reseller instead; they'll be nicer with you and will surely get your laptop fixed... they have a reputation to mantain, unlike Sager, who don't have much competition so they dont care much.

    My temps are
    idle: 35-40C (room temp ~ 20C)
    GTAIV with cooler: 75C @(680-1000-1700)-(room temp ~ 20C)
    GTAIV w/o cooler: 93C @(600-1000-1500) (room temp ~ 30C)
    GTAIV with cooler: 89C @(600-1000-1500) (room temp ~ 30C)
    COD5 with cooler: 80 @(600-1000-1500) (room temp ~ 30C)
    COD5 with cooler: 70 @(680-1000-1700) (room temp ~ 20C)

    so 93C is my highest

^Didn`t know the roomtemperature had that big of an impact, looking at the COD5 difference and the clocks.

Overvolted and overclocked 630/1575/1000, ~85C tops in WaW, Crysis, GTA4, etc. Stock voltage and lower clocks, ~75C tops.

    Mine does the same thing.

    My Idle temp is 54

Stock voltage and clocks I get up to the high 90s while on a cooler running Furmark and my GPU crashes.

Also happens in CoD5 and WoW.

I checked the thermal paste, cleared off the paste from the processor and reapplied but same thing.

EDIT: I should also add I've been emailing Sager for over 2 months regarding the issue and never receive a reply.

Wow this is ridiculous. My Sager NP8660 with the 280m idle around 40-45 and max temp when heavy gaming is around 85-88 in about the same room temp as yours. Only until I overclock my max temp. would be around 90-92. And my laptop only have one fan blowing sharing with the cpu! I say you have a major complaint there my friend.

You can do as I did, and a few others, and purchase VGA memory heatsinks off newegg and stick em to the gpu heatsink. 2 sets should do ya fine, and leave a bit to cool the cpu too. Dropped my max temps almost 10C. I've got room for another pack too, perhaps I could drop another 5C on top of that. Putting OCZ freeze on instead of the landfill of Artic Silver 5 they put on also does wonders for dropping the temps down. I always overheat when I get the system back from them and they sucked at putting grease down.

Otherwise, if they don't accepts an RMA of the card, either make the modifications I mentioned or wait till the card fries and get a brand new one.

Does the VGA memory heatsinks fit in the M860TU?

Sry for asking, but if you stick them on heatsink, doesn`t the heat stay in the laptop and doesn`t get transfered to the fan blowing the heat out?

A pic or link to a pic would be appreciated.

I have no idea for the M860TU. It might not work, since things are crammed in there so much tighter, but its worth the $10 to find out. With the M570TU, the CPU and GPU fans create natural airflow through the system, venting the added internal heat out. This method works extremely well with notebook coolers.

Lets say it fit, should I notice a difference in temps because of my Zalman cooler?

I`m guessing it is not easy to tell, but an educated guess do well. :) I will buy it anyway to test.

Well they replace the heatsink and the gpu, but they are telling me that during heavy 3D applications the gpu reach 99ºC and thats normal for them. i told them that thats not common from a clevo m570tu that has big heatsinks.

i send to them via xoticpc support the link of this thread, that way if they take a look they will realize that something is wrong because clevos m860tu (with a gtx 280m upgrade) owners get better temps with only one fan.

They do fit into the M86oTU, those VGA memory heatsinks are quite small http://tinyurl.com/npzvws

As to how effective they are, I don't know yet.

You're wasting your money if you buy aluminium heatsinks like the Zalman ones you linked to.

Anything that isn't aluminium. I don't know how much ceiling clearance the M860TU has, so you may need to find something that is 8mm or shorter.

Thanks for the info, will look into it.

EDIT: I ordered some Copper ones from Ebay. Will be interesting to test out.

EDIT: I tested out the heatsinks and found absolutely no difference before and after. All temperatures including the CPU and GPU were exactly the same.

jupapri, what thermal paste did you use to replace the stock paste?

I replaced some Artic Silver 5 with OCZ Freeze on the video card and it reduced my load temps 7-15 degrees depending on the application in use. Although I have a 9800 mGTX, I idle 37-38c (on a Zalman 2000 low fan setting).
    21.5 ambient temp.
