I am pretty happy with everything apart from the screen. I want a 120hz screen with this laptop. I have found one online that will fit the P170SM-A perfectly as it has the same dimensions and the same 40 pin connector. But will it work is my question? I want it mainly to watch 3D Blu-rays on the notebook. I know you need the Nvidia 3D Vision 2 kit for the 3D but will Optimus stop it from working?
I simply just don't understand the Optimus vs 3D thing, could someone please explain it to me? Can't get a definitive answer on it anywhere. Very frustrating. Do all of Nvidias mobile GPU's come with Optimus as standard? Nvidias website says the 870m supports both 3D Vision & Optimus so is this no longer an issue with the new cards? I know Optimus doesn't work for external displays but will it work for the internal monitor?
Is there another reason why this might not work as I can't find a P170SM-A with a 120hz internal monitor anywhere?
Thanks for your responses in advance. This is wrecking my head.

I doubt it has the same 40 pin connector. That's either a typo or a different kind of connector (eg 40 pin EDP or it's actually 50 pin LVDS)

Here is the link for the 120hz screen I am talking about:
Screen for ASUS G750JH. Replacement Laptop LCD Screens
When cross referenced with the P170SM-A screens ( Screen for Clevo P170SM-A. Replacement Laptop LCD Screens) you can see everything is the exact same.
What you think Meaker? -

They listed it wrong.
-
Which one is listed wrong? What is the connection for the P170SM-A so do you know?
Are u basically saying that there is no 120hz screen that can be used with the P170SM-A in that case? -

The Asus is 50 pin and no 1080p 120hz 40 pin lvds panels exist due to bandwidth requirements.
-
Ah well that puts that to bed so. Thanks Meaker. And i am to assume that hooking the laptop up to an external 120hz monitor will not work because of Optimus?

Results vary, it's not been done very often.
-
Thats all i need to hear. Thanks Meaker. One final question, if i could find a laptop with a 120hz screen in it and a 870m graphics card, does that mean that the 870m graphics card in the notebook will have to be without Optimus? Does Nvidia make seperate 870m cards for 3D Vision and seperate 870m cards for Optimus or is there only one type of 870m card?

One type of card but different motherboard routing and system/video bios. Yes 3D internal models do not have optimus.

My post from another thread.

That's cool. The reason optimus laptops don't do 120hz screens is no longer electrical since pci-e 3.0 but due to nvidia being the only one to support the type of internal connection used.

Yea, it's too bad, but at least I can use my 24in 144hz, hoping to get lightboost running this weekend.
