    Hello,

    First question on the Clevo section :)

    I might get a W880CU and

    Just wondering :
    1) what type of 7970m is in the CLEVO W880CU ? same MXM 3.0b as for all Clevos? specific vbios for the W880CU ?
    2) is that specific 7970m compatible with the other clevo models (as in interchangeable)? if yes, does it need any vbios tweeks?
    3) is that specific 7970m compatible with other brands = ex: Alienware?
    3.a) if yes, does it need any vbios tweeks?
    3.b) can it be placed in a m17x (r2) or m18x (R1 / R2) ? if yes, does it need any vbios tweeks?

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    As far as i know the w880cu needs 7970m with enduro off(doesnt suport enduro).
    The clevo cards are compatible with aliewares systems without any bios tweak,but with enduro off.
    The dell 7970m can't be compatible with clevo systems.

    Correct!

    The barebones with GPU is worth double the price of the gpu itself. Idea: stick the Clevo 7970m in my m18x R2, put the card from the m18x in the W880CU, add a hdd (have plenty of those), add RAM (have plenty of those), buy an i7 920 (100 $) and voila, a nice working 800 $ Clevo W880cu machine for personal use or for sale! plus i get a top market gpu in my m18x :)

    Just tote up the total value before you upgrade as often you can get a smaller more modern system for the same cash, especially if you can get a bit from the original one (as a system or parts).

    I just bought one off eBay for $58. So... ya.

    Btw I just finished the exact same build-- w880cu w/ radeon 7970m. Got a core i7-920qm, 16 gb corsair vengeance ram, and an agility 4 256gb ssd. Rocking system so far. The only problem I've had is with the wireless card -- which card are you using for your build? Any way you could link it, or show a pic? I'm using an intel card (wireless n) but been having serious issues w/ getting a stable connection.

    I'll definitely let you know once I get the system finalized. Been tough to get all my programs downloaded since the internal wireless isn't working. I've been using an older USB networking stick, but that just died on me yesterday :-/ once I get 3dmark downloaded I'll run everything and update everyone on it.

    Just ran 3dmark 2011 and got about 5700 on the main test (using the free program, of course).

    I was going to try to overclock to see what I could hit (using msi afterburner & reg edits) but any number of MHz I went up (literally even just 1mhz) would give me bad visual artifacting. I'm still looking to see what the issue is on that.

    I (unfortunately) got a card w/ only 2 antennas, which wouldn't let me connect to my network at all. However, I could connect to my work network ( very stable ) just fine. After hours of work, I reset my router and everything worked fine. Gotta love networking issues :p

    which drivers were u using for that 3dmark run? if ure on pre 12.11 beta i would advise upgrading to the latest 13.2 beta5, cuz anything newer than 12.10 whql will give u a significant performance boost :)

    that artifacting sounds quite familiar, try the following:

    In the install dir of Afterburner, find and open up MSIAfterburner.cfg. You will need to open this up as a windows administrator and modify the following line:
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 2

    if the artifacting still persists, change that value back to 1 and check out this thread right here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-mobility-7970-m17x-r3-illustrated-guide.html

    disable the ULPS function as described there and see if that helps any.

    third option would be to use AMD overdrive instead of afterburner for overclocking. for that, check out the vbios mod thread for the 7970M in my signature and see update no. 4 for details on how to activate overdrive in CCC :)

    I completely agree... I can't find one online for anything less than 300-250$... Im so depressed as i want one so bad to achieve more performance... (I already have the record 3DMARK11 Pscore for the first gen Mobile i7's.) :L

    It's worth trying the 1.075V bios as you might get even better results with it.

    Thanks for the advice on changing the .cfg file - That did the trick.

    I was able to hit 5559 on my non-oc'd 13.2 Beta driver setup, but with OC'ing the Core to 975 and Memory to 1400, I was able to bring my score up to a sweet 6028 :)

    I'm gonna tinker around with it a little more to ensure it's stable, but so far that seems about the top end on stock voltage I can hit. I tried to hit 1ghz, but crashed at those speeds w/ stock voltage.

    u can always try the 1.075v overvolt vbios, its shown some pretty stable and nice results so far :) it usually allows u to go about 30-40 mhz higher on the core. just check my modded vbios thread in my signature on how to do the flashing, steps are identical and it also included the links to the overvolting vbios versions :)

    Yeah, I'll take a look-see at it. Blind flashing always makes me a little nervous, and considering I'm coming from a GeForce 9800 Gt, the performance gains right now are pretty considerable :p

    no need for blind-flashing my friend. that blind-flashing guide is only for 7970M gpus with enduro functionality enabled. since urs already is disabled u have total control of ur screen during the flashing process at all times ;) the commands are still the same tho :)

    Oh nice! Thanks for the info -- I think I'll definitely try that then. I got a little instability at around 975/1400, so I've since clocked it back. But I think the extra bit of juice will help.

    So far the cooling has been great on the 7970 -- the highest my temps will hit playing any game I throw at it is around 66-68 Celcius. I think I'll have some decent overhead to overclock.

    Building the laptop next week ;) so excited!

    Clevo 7970m => into the new m18x r2
    660m from m18x R2 => Clevo (i hope that works out)

    660m doesn't work in the clevo... EC system compliance I believe....

    That is correct, the sager card goes into the alienware just fine but an alienware card wont run in a sager.

    Does this mean that any card from a Clevo laptop (whatever model as long as right mxm format + energy consumption) will work in this?

    Like for example a Clevo D90xF 480m GTX should work in this?

    Thnaks!

    No it does not ensure it will, for instance a clevo/sager 780M will not work in any EM series or before machine, it just means if it's from a different brand there is no chance.
