Hello, I've been noticing some weird things about my CPU. I recently re-ran the windows experience index and my CPU got a much lower score. The score is now 4.6. I don't remember exactly what it was before, but it had to be at least 6 or 7.
I also tried doing a test for it on the program called "BurnInTest" which this was the log for my CPU:
LOG NOTE: 2011-09-19 06:53:54, Status, Main Tests started
LOG NOTE: 2011-09-19 06:53:54, CPU, SSE4a test(s) selected, but CPU feature not detected
LOG NOTE: 2011-09-19 07:09:02, Status, Test run stopped

Some games don't run as well anymore too. Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike: Source get really low FPS. Battlefield Bad Company 2 seems to run okay in the game, but while in the menus, the FPS is fairly low and choppy. It's not just the games, other programs feel like they're slower too.

Is my CPU failing? Is there any other way to test to see if my CPU is good?

    My specs:
    Model: Malibal Lotus P150HM
    Processor: Intel Core i7-2720QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.2GHz
    Memory: 8GB, PC3-10660/1333MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5
    Hard Drive: 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300 Hybrid w/ 4GB NAND Flash

    Try prime95.

When CPU tests fail, its either the RAM or CPU.

I think it may be the RAM, so try to run memtest+ as well.

Run hwmonitor on the side to check if you're throttling/overheating.

Hard to say with just what is provided. TBH its rare for a CPU to fail and normally when they do they are just dead.

Is it able to get up to its correct clock rates under load? You can use something like CPUz and run the burn in test and see what the speed jumps too. It may just somehow have windows or another program screwing with it and its locked at a slow speed which can be a power plan on windows or the hotkey software not set to performance.

Those would def cause the score to be low.

With that CPU you should be in upper 6 to low 7 range... I am 7.5 but next bump up on the CPU (and the newer ver at that)

With the way these new cpus dynamically clock that isn't really true. My first cpu was unstable at the turbo boost clocks but just fine at 2.0ghz. I sent it back because it was defective.

Alright, I did the BurnInTest again.

I searched around making sure no programs/hotkeys were slowing me down and found nothing.

The memtest was successful and I ran the prime95 test for 30 minutes with no errors. Not sure if I should have kept it running longer though...?

As for overheating, it doesn't happen with me. All my temperatures are usually quite low.

Check to be sure that your power options are set to high performance and that your clocks are set correctly when gaming (CPUz, HWMonitor are good tools).

Stress test the processor with an application like Prime95 as well. If you still notice slowdowns, you may just want to reinstall Windows to be sure it's not a software issue.

As for the SSE4a issue- that's an instruction set specific to AMD processors, so I'd hope it wouldn't be detected SSE4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EDIT: And this may sound silly, but are you plugged in to the wall when testing? Battery power will have dramatically lower results.

I will run CPUz, Prime95 and HWMonitor again. What exactly should I be looking for when running these programs? And how will I know if they are set correctly?

Alright, good to know about the SSE4a issue. And I did reinstall Windows 7, I still have the problem.

And yes, I am plugged in to the wall and have my battery mode set to high performance.

Leaving my laptop for 30 minutes with nothing running, except a few programs in the background. I noticed quite a bit of activity and I'm not sure what program it would have came from.

Which is weird because even when I play CS:S, the CPU doesn't even see that much activity.

If you Install the Top Process Gadget from the link below, you can see which software is using your cpu, you can change the default three process to however many you want i use five.

    FIXED!

Thanks to the quick and helpful support from Malibal, my laptop is running faster than ever! :)

In case anyone has the same problem (perhaps a Googler?), all you have to do is flash your BIOS. If you need help, ask for support from your computers manufacturer.
