I should be receiving my x7200 from LPC-Digital this week. (Thank you BabyHemi! the purchase and customer service was impeccable, and I look forward to purchasing again!)

    the specs are as follows:

    • i7 950
    • Nvidia 485m in SLI
    • 12GB RAM
    • 120G Intel x-25 SSD
    • blu-ray burner, thermal compound, blah blah blah.

and this is my first purchase of a windows PC/Laptop of this magnitude. all i've owned up to now are Macs. and many of them, and while I love them, they are the gaming machines I want. so this is my baby....

but, that being said. this is really a foreign land for me beyond the basics.

Please forgive me if I sound ignorant, but is there a guide? here on the forums or elsewhere that discusses the DIY or how-to of OC'ing the GPU and CPU? I've searched and search and I didn't find anything really specific. I'm not sure if it's in the BIOS, or if i download the XTU for the x7200 and do it there? how about the GPU? is it just the clock multiplier? is that the same/different/ including the BLCK? what about the GPU? where do i clock that?

i have so many questions, and I'd love to learn, but have no idea to start. :(

like what should be the first things I should do when I get my computer... there should be a thread.. "before you start gaming - here's your checklist"

    • how to update/flash BIOS
    • how to install windows
    • updating your drivers
    • overclock gpu/cpu - is it for you?
    • the OC bug - will it ever stop?
    • now that you've mortgaged your home for computer parts, where to mail you hardware...

i guess i'm looking for a little guidance.... remember I came from Mac... turn it on and go. The most i've done on windows, is install bootcamp on my imac, put 64-bit windows 7 on it and go... is it much different? should I even mess with updating BIOS?

i hope someone can direct me here on the forums or elsewhere as i enter the world of benching and OC'ing.

    -edison

PS. when i get it, does anyone want any numbers? 3dmark06, vantage, etc for this configuration? unboxing, etc. I'd be happy to oblige. (when i figure it out how to run those programs.

thanks again for all the help from the members of this forum.

CPU overclocking will not be possible with that CPU. However, the i7-950 will be powerful enough for all you games and 99% of the games to come out in the next 1 - 2 years, so why bother?

The GPU setup will also probably be nearly as strong as a desktop GTX 580, so there is no need to overclock. I'd wait till the GTX 560 is out and supported by tools like MSI afterburner or EVGA Precision than you can o/c those cards.

Installing drivers will be pretty straight forward, just put the driver CD in and follow instructions.

For bios updates, check the Clevo BIOS Thread.

Btw, any benchmark from a GTX 485M SLi system would be awesome! Knowing how far you can push those cards would be great as well, but the oc decision should be yours to make.

Wow that would be awesome, but I have not read anything about overclocking of a non-extreme CPU being possible in the X7200 or any newer Clevo notebook for that matter. So OCing is possible with the current X7200 even without any PLL mod? That is a big selling point, should be posted all over this forum ;-)
