I currently own a Clevo P370EM with these specs:
    GTX 680m
    i7-3630QM @ 2.40 GHz (Turbo to 3.4 GHz)
    12 GB RAM

I want to upgrade my CPU to the i7-3840QM (2.8-3.8 GHz), or possibly to the new Haswell i7-4900MQ (2.8-3.8 GHz), if it is worth it. I don't know if it is truly any better, i just wondered because it is new, and it is suppose to be good at gaming. My question is this: Do i literally just buy the new CPU and swap the old one out? Or is there more to it? And if there is more to it, could someone please easily explain on how, or what to do? I do know where the CPU port is on my laptop, and how to properly open it and whatnot, i just don't know if i have to change the bios around? (Which i don't know how to do) Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

you wouldn't be able to upgrade to 4xxx series. they use a different socket. you need to stick to 3xxx series

what drgnblues said. also, u can use intel xtu in order to oc that new cpu of urs by 400 mhz since its turbo boost multiplier is partly unlocked :) just make sure uve got the proper thermal paste and cooling at hand! aside from that, no bios modifications necessary

The new Haswell CPU's are better then Ivy Bridge for gaming but that really refers to the gaming performance of the iGPU. If you were able to upgrade to it (which as mentioned previously you can't) you wouldnt see much of any increase in gaming since the 680M is whats running the game. If you want to get better gaming performance look into getting a second 680M for SLI.

3740qm + intel XTU overclock along with a second 680M would see you very well for some time if you want more performance.

Even a single 680M is very good, although we've seen it put to the test (/cough Crysis 3 /cough), but yeah a Haswell chip will not be doable. I agree with the 3740qm + XTU suggestion above. :)

Thanks for all the responses! From what ive gathered, is it better to get the 3740qm over the 3840qm? I play pretty CPU intense games like Planetside 2 and Arma, so whatever is better. I am planning on getting a second GTX 680m, but i think the CPU is the priority. Thanks!

3840QM is +100mhz and +2MB of cache if the 3740qm is struggling then the 3840qm is not doing much better.

That and the price difference between the two is often rather large for not a lot of gain, so it's seldom justified to shell out extra for it.

Indeed I mean 3.9ghz to 4.0ghz is a 2.5% clock difference when they are both tweaked in XTU.

Thanks again for all the responses! I'll probably just go with the 3840QM, just because i want to get that tiny extra amount of speed, plus i don't really mind the price difference. And just out of curiosity, would it be possible to put a GTX 780m in this laptop? I'm sorry for being such a noob at this stuff, i would just rather know from people who actually know, rather than just guessing if it is. Thanks!

And if anyone has link on how to overclock the 3840QM past the turbo boost, that would be great! Thanks!

quite straightforward mate, just install the latest version of intel xtu and off u go ;) the program gui is pretty self explanatory. if the newest version doesnt work u may wanna go ahead and try different older ones, just in case.
as for the 780m, its still being sorted out for pre-SM machines. there are some bios issues to handle, so hang in there :)

I am in a good position to comment - i upgraded from 3610 to 3840 and was glad i did

I have CFX 7970M , and whilst it definately made a difference to benchmarks, actual gaming was more subtle - but i guess extra power always helps- the overclocking was really easy, and the extra 400mhz is always a plus.

Anyway i am glad i upgraded, and my 3DMARK11 SCORE is insane - 11977 - the highest p370m on there, and the highest 3840m with 7970 cfx in the world, on there too (official) as far as i can tell :) - If someone else can prove me wrong, then of course all credit due :)
AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3840QM,CLEVO P370EM score: P11977 3DMarks
I think your money would be better spent on an extra GFX card though

Hi mate! You know P370EM picks also dual GTX 680M right? If so, how do you think your near 12k score is highest P370EM if the same machine with overclocked GTX 680M in SLI scores more higher than that? My single mid overclocked 680M scores more than 8k, how if I put another one on my P370EM3?
Sorry if I got it wrong but I think you said your 12k is the highest p370em on there, right?

btw I owned 7970M earlier and it runs so hot on stock clocks so overclock would be even more problem for P370EM.

    and here is my score:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3940XM,CLEVO P370EM score: P8248 3DMarks

Your best bet will be to contact the place you purchased the computer from and see if they have any available.

Your reseller may be a good source; otherwise, you can often find the cards on eBay.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the replies, and sorry for not posting for a while. I did upgrade to the 3840QM and saw a very noticeable performance boost! It was very easy, i just put it in, and it immediately installed itself. Thanks for all the help! And now im off to upgrade for a second 680m. Thanks all again!
