I have the x7200 with i7 950. I was converting videos earlier with all four cores and eight threads, and the CPU was constantly over 90% usage. It eventually reached 92C-96C across the cores. Idle temp is normal at around 70C. I lifted the bottom and have three extra fans on the notebook stand blowing in the intake vents. The back is also clear without obstruction for air. How can I better the temps at high load? By having an actual floor fan blowing at it?

It even IDLES at 70C? Thats NOT normal. I suggest you repaste and clean the fans and heatsinks. Something is definetely wrong there.

yeah, OP should mention what your ambient temps are lol. if it's 20C you're in trouble, but if they're closer to 40-50C (in which case maybe you should have invested in an A/C unit instead of a laptop lol), your idle may be normal.

By the computer model and CPU you have i'm gonna guess the computer is about a year old. Have you ever opened up the bottom panel to give it a good cleaning? Get a can of compressed air and blow out the heatsinks, vents, and fans. Its a good idea to do this at least once every six months. Dust is the number one reason for excessive heat. Give it a try and see what your temps are after.

I cleaned it once. Room temp is about 30C, and I made a mistake when I said idle at 70C. I forgot I had some background programs running. Idle is more like 60C, but still not great. I'll clean again and check if it makes a difference.

Just cleaned again. At 100% load, the highest core is 87C. Is that kind of ok?

87C would be ok for a GPU but CPU is still high. Next suggestion would be to reapply the thermal compound. IC Diamond is widely recommended as it tends to have the lowest temps.
