Hi i'm working with a lot of cpu ( and ram ) intensive apps when i'm producing music.

i use a lot of virtual instruments all the time so im in doubt if i'd not better buy a QuadCore desktop system which is obviously fast enough and a lot cheaper.

i'd like to see some performance sketches with the latest notebookcpu's vs a q6600 desktop AND notebook version.

can anyone help me and tell me if i will have sufficient performance power with a loaded m570ru not bugging my vsti's?

Mmmm professional should stick with desktop... you will never have the same performance on a laptop... even if everyone say that the 901c is the greatest laptop of all time... its not as good as a real desktop...

But... if you have to move your desktop everywhere.. maybe your better with a laptop... so if you have the extra 1000$ go with a 901c... if not the 570ru is your 2nd choice :)

i use FL studio on a 3 year old compaq presario r4000 with a 2ghz single core (3200+) processor... i don't get anywhere near using full cpu with 15-20 multilayer patterns and 10 or synths/vsts at the same time.

i would definetly go for a quad core... i am producing on FL producer edition... i usually have 16+ instruments on seperate channels with more than 1 effect on each channel... sometimes the songs dont play very smoothly.. i have dual core 1.6 ghz sony vaio wit 1 mg ram... i am getting da new system below soon... i can't wait becaz dis is really bugging me(da songs lagging)...

sometimes u gotta produce something at home and then take it studio, or u have a studio at home and gotta go to work sometimes with ur pc.. da laptop is definetly the best way to go if ur in my case(where i also travel to different countries and don't want to hurl around a desktop in my bag - i already gotta carry a fantom X6)...

i just hope FL works in Vista 64 bit

-- da macs dat ive seen running pro tools in studios arent nearly as powerful as the new windows laptops that have been comming out recently so i dont think there should be any problems(except for da fact pro tools doesnt run in vista 64...lol)

yes, thanks for the replies, but i dont have awfully lot to spend, my real question i guess is:

will a t9500 be sufficient when using 4gyg ram?

and how does the q6600 perform against the t9500 notebook and the q6600 desktop version?

The Q6600 used in the NP9262 is the same thing as is put in the desktop, there is no difference between the CPUs. I'd definitely recommend a quad-core for your uses, they have an incredible amount of power.

/me slaps himselve on the head...
lol i forgot that the d900c has desktop chips.
that'd get very expensive, i mean i can get a faster system for under 1000€,
it's a bit dumb to buy a notebook then, but still i need one for schoolwork.

Hi Derq, I thought I would chime in.

I'm a musician and producer myself, so I can understand the situation you're in here.

Here is something to consider: I use a mobile studio when not inside my main studio, be it on the road or whatnot. However, I'm more limited using that and use it mainly only for idea purposes for when I can get back to my main studio. Realistically, you would be better off dumping the money into a good desktop for your music stuff, and buying something cheaper for a mobile school lappy that you can work on unless you plan on going mobile with your studio, which really isn't all that economical.

    Just my .02

I'll chime in here, too. If you want a notebook for music recording and editing, the NP9262's quad core will give some awesome performance. Dual core is still plenty sufficient for sound recording/editing, though.

If the Firewire port is important for your uses, however, I do know that the NP9262 is the only notebook Sager offers with a Texas Instruments Firewire controller.

    Derq-
You can go to www.tomshardware.com and they have mobile and desktop CPU charts to compare the performance of these chips while running specific tasks. Granted you will have to open both charts to compare Mobile chips versus Desktop chips, but it will give you an idea of the performance differences.

I have already done this and is why I went with the desktop Quad core instead of any mobile chip.

hehe, now i don't even have to look anymore right? :p

the mobile quad core version comes in may right? well, the desktop alternative is way cheaper than using a d900c, so i guess i'll just go for the desktop and a smaller notebook.
however: i travel between 2 cities in holland, my parents live somewhere and i go there during the weekends... then in the midweek i'm in an other city where i go to college and have my appartment...
heh so then mobility would be nice, to be able to use it with my parents too..
but if that is worth like 2500€ extra? :S

Well, if it makes you feel any better, the 9262 loaded and a desktop might WEIGH the same. :p
So, it really depends on how often you move, how often you'd 'set up shop', etc.

its just the fact that i'd live to take it to my parents house, but is that worth the money lol.. for every maxed d900c i can get 4 better desktop systems :/

well, if you live in europe - u should go for a company that is based in europe... there are a couple good ones... now if u say money is an issue, you should understand that in some cases, bringing a new pc from the u.s. to a foreign country does require you to pay taxes(sometimes very expensive).. unless you LIE(which i do not encourage you to do, but also do not discourage you)
unless you are going to ship it direct from the company in da u.s. (which also sounds expensive)....

i just dont think its worth getting anything outside of europe if thats where ur currently at...

    ok now,
for music editing\producing, im sure u will not need a top of da line PC(pro tools runs fine on dual core 1.8 ghz n up chips)... it all depends on what u do with ur pc...

now if u like to play gamez take mind that all these new games are gonna require windows vista, 2gig ram, 8gbs of space n up, and most are gonna be multi threaded(dual core based, some new games are being made for the quad core).....

if ur just gonna use it for music production and using word then ur not gonna need Quad core power, im sure a dual core 2.4 ghz setup would run just fine..

    now.. laptop vs desktop..

u are not gonna get the same power out of a laptop as u can get from a desktop.. that being said, i would look around european based laptop sellers, and then desktop sellers and see which one fits your budget more...

i know plenty of studio owners that use a laptop as their only studio computer..(it just depends on ur case, if u need to move a lot get a laptop, unless you can stay for a couple of days in ur parents house without ur email n ur muzik, but then again u could move ur desktop around but it just isnt practical)

    check out www.rockdirect.com

a custom laptop manufacture in da UK...

hope dat long ass text reply helps...

thanks, no hard feelings but i was planning to get an m570ru from rock in october, but decided to wait for an 8800 hehe :) yea it's important for me to produce in the weekends i realise.
the new penryn processors with 6mb cache, like the T9500 would be good enough i guess. i might be able to wait until may 2008 when another new set of cpu's are released... then again, that might come with a new clevo too.

still, my currency is the euro and i could get a notebook from any us reseller for much cheaper than in europe. then again... how would the warranty work? and... will there be any reseller willing to participate in this by for example sending the warranty files and payment tickets separately? ;)

A small note about the upcoming mobile quad-core processor - it's going to be a $1,000 chip since it will be an Extreme Edition processor. So, very expensive. ;) It will also be restricted to very few notebooks that can handle its thermal output. I doubt it will be very popular.

Derq, the Q6700 is what $500 - 600 atm? When Penryn is released the Q9450 is going to be priced at $350. About 1/2 the price. This is for the desktop chips in the D901C. When you finally see a mobile Quad, what chad is saying is that it will be more than likely $1000. If you can hold out wait for Clevo to announce support for Penryn for the D901C. Then get a Q9450 in it. I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

The reason behind the lower price is the fact that Intel's manufacturing process appears to be cheaper with Penryn. Right now the Mobile Penryn T9300, which runs at 2.5 GHz with 6 MB of L2 cache is the same price as the T7700, which runs at 2.4 GHz with 4 MB of L2 cache. Either Intel is trying to take the price war to AMD along with their leading performance, or they've just figured out how to manufacture quality for a lower price.

Today an average laptop should be powerful enough for any audio work. It's got more power than desktops of 2-3 years ago, and there was no shortage of power back then.

About the quad, it may be a waste of money if you are on a budget, because your apps may end up using only one or two cores anyway. It depends on what you will be using, so check whether your DAW uses more than 1,2... cores..

Obviously you still get more power for your money with desktops, but if you have to move it around a lot forget about it.

thanks, still it's nice to be able to have a quad core as it's more future built, and incredible capable of running heavy tasks.

what is the difference between the Q9450 and lets say a T9500 performancewise?
