    Other then the price would there be much of a noticeable difference between the i7-960 and i7-970 for hardcore gaming?

    Probably not.. Gaming will hit your GPU's harder than the CPU.

    As Hizaah said, any difference between the two CPUs would be extremely subtle. If you changed out the GPU, that's where you will see the big performance increase for gaming.

    the new sandybridge with turbo boost 2.0 can beat x58 quadcore

    While this is true, you don't really need/can't really use that much CPU power while gaming. If it was for another purpose, sure. But in gaming, you'd be hard pressed to max all 8 threads on a 920, nevermind the 960.
