Can I upgrade P770DM-G with GTX 1070?

Hi all,

Trying to find out if there are any hardware specific requirements to install a GTX 1070 into my P770DM-G which currently has a 970M. I know I need a Clevo or MSI 1070mxm 3.0b card. I currently have Premabios on the machine on the latest version. Do I have to modify heatsink or any of those types of things in the machine?

You wont be able to physically fit a pascal Clevo 3.0b (and up) in there / plus that you will need an MXM power mod as well for the card to even start.
Best bet for you will be a MSI 1070 and mod the chassis.

 

Why wouldn't I be able to fit a 1070 if it's the exact same dimensions as the 970m since it's 3.0b? What does a MXM power mod entail?

Clevo Gtx 1070 not the same size as Gtx 970. Pascal / Rtx cards are bigger (plus they require extra power connector)

Even tough is for another laptop the principle is the same.

Like I have told you before, your best bet is a MSI 1070 (no extra power cable required). But still most probably you will have to dremel mod your case to fit.

 

Ok thank you, so when you say MSI 1070 you mean getting it straight from them instead of Clevo who is the company that manufactured my laptop? I've looked online for 1070 mxm 3.0b and have found some but have no idea how I would determine that it's from MSI as they aren't typically listed like that.

Clevo 1070 will not fit in the P770DM, period.
MSI 1070 has almost the same form factor as the 970m (exception makes the little tab on the right). If you go on this path you will have to somehow accommodate that tab in your laptop frame/case.

You will see that 970m and the 1070 msi resembles a bit / clevo gtx 1070 is totally different and bigger.

On the second topic, you cannot buy MSI cards directly from MSI. You need to find one from private sellers. Like this one for example:

But before buying be sure that the laptop frame and case can accommodate the extra tab.
Search the forum, for any upgrade attempt like you want to do, read, read more, understand exactly what you need to do before trying this.

 

The 1070 you listed is mxm 3.1 which is why there is a size difference, this is not the same form factor as the 1070 3.0b as listed here.

Had a lot of users on the forum complain about those repurposed Chinese boards. Did you asked the seller for compatibility?

Please stop cross posting across multiple threads, you are reducing visibility that others need for their own threads.

First off Clevo cards can work just fine but they are more work than they are worth when other options are on the table, its already been done on these machines as well as Alienware 17 R1. So, "Cant" is wrong, justifiable? Probably not, especially when there are other options.

Second, 1070 dont think require cutting into the chassis, it does require removing a capacitor for the subwoofer and also removing the M.2 slot. It has been done already.

To my knowledge the "Dell" 1070's may not work at work at all. At the very least I havent seen it. Reason being if the Clevo system board cant get the sensor information it needs from the card then the system will turn off without consent as to prevent damage to the laptop. This doesnt mean damage is happening, just that the system cant determine operation.

The best card that is unconfirmed to work but also wouldnt require any modification at all is the P5200 which are from HP. Most of the time those cards do not have a vBIOS included as HP laptops contain that information on the system board and not the GPU. That can be fixed by soldering on a vBIOS chip and flashing a vBIOS to said chip. For this model laptop that would be uncharted territory. Same thing could be said for the rtx 5000. Very expensive cards though since they are technically quadro's

Gysnc will likely be lost regardless of what you do as that requires a handshake between the system, panel, and GPU. That couldve changed since I last looked into it but that is my current understanding of that scenario.

My apologies if I posted in more than one place, I was trying the Tapatalk app on my phone and I got lost and thought my posts were not going through. Thank you for your responses, I assumed the P771dm was different from my P770dm so I'll have to look and see what, if anything, changed between those two models. The laptop is plugged into 2 monitors and external speakers 99% of the time so I don't mind losing the subwoofer but yeah I would probably be bummed if I lost my m.2 slot (unless there are two in there) as thats obviously faster than sata

 

There are 2 M.2 slots iirc, you would lose one of them. The one below the left fan (when laptop is upside down) if they are the same.

They are faster but hard to justify as most end user work loads are not dense enough to really benefit from speeds of that level. One such example iirc is garbage collection in photo or video editing, but if they are the same or similar in price then who cares lol

 

Oh yes I pulled up the manual and I see, in mine thats actually an m.2 sata and its empty in my setup so no issues there either. I messaged @DaMafiaGamer as all the photos in his thread are gone.

 

The one at the end is a cosmetic difference identifier.

 

I'm sorry, what are you referencing? Also, do you guys sell older generation systems, like to clear out inventory and such?

 

Not for long once things change over, we wind them down before switch over to avoid over stock.

770 = Standard
771 = different design but same internals

 

Ok got it, so I'm assuming that has already happened since 11th Gen has launched and we are aways off before 12th gen? I just don't need the latest, just looking for a modest upgrade to what I have now without spending $3000.
