With my system (MALIBAL Lotus P151HM1) is it possible to just take out my existing 7200 RPM HD, and upgrade to a Solid State Drive?

or is there an extra HD slot I can use and just add a SSD?

Please let me know, and if I need any specific type to upgrade. Specs are in my signature.

    Thanks,

One slot unless you put a caddy in the optical bay.

Just be aware the main drive bay is SATA 3, the optical is SATA 2, so the SSD needs to go in the main bay, HDD in the optical (in caddy).

Can you link me/recommend a good caddy that I can use?

    Thanks!

How big does the HD have to be for the Operating System?

64GB minimum and 128GB recommended if you want to put anything else on it.

If you are going to keep your existing HD for storage 128 may be enough, but if you are going to go with the SSD alone, I would recommend a 256 gb at minimum. I thought 128 was going t be enough, but with the OS and just a couple of games i find myself jockeying programs/games around to keep a few gigs free.

Right now with BF3, BF4 beta, COD BO2 and a few smaller programs installed - I have 2-8 gigs free at any time. I'm looking at either upgrading my 128 to a 256 or adding a 128-256 gb mSATA for games/programs and leaving the SSD for the OS and progs that can benefit from the sata3 speeds.

Well in most things the OS cares about small file speeds anyway.

    Hey Meaker,

Could you recommend a caddy for me from Newegg? I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking for.

    Thanks,

You can get it few bucks cheaper from eBay which doesn't make much difference compare to third party seller on newegg.
