For all the owners out there with the ATI 5870 card, what is the heat like on the bottom of the laptop when gaming? I like to use my laptops on my lap for gaming, and would prefer not using a cooler. Can I game on the NP8690/W860CU on my lap? Notebookcheck's review says the bottom reaches up 46C at load, which is too hot for my lap, but the model they reviewed had the 280M.
Thanks!

it depends on your ambient temperature. However, 46C at load is warm at best IMO. Though I won't recommend gaming on your lap with 8690, as you will block the intake vents underneath, unless you take precautions to avoid them, but it will make it an uncomfortable posture.

Yeah, your legs will be in the way of the vents unless you have very thin thighs. I'm skinny and they still block the vents when I put it on my lap.

Yeah, tape the mouse pad to your stomach while your at it
All kidding aside it's not recoommended. -
what games are you trying to play on your lap?
good luck with any that require a mouse! -
By keeping it on your lap, not only are you turning yourself sterile like Tom Cruise, but it is also likely that your lap will block the intake vents on the underside of the laptop. This laptop is just much too heavy and bulky to try and balance on one knee for any period of time.

I actually do this all the time, but you have to do it in a specific kind of way. Only way I can describe it is sit with your legs split apart like a "dude". This way, the fans aren't blocked and your lap doesn't get hot. I've done this for hours at a time, it's not uncomfortable.

Buy a loptop pad that vents out the back.
I got one for about $35.
It's got a fan, blows out the back, not the bottom. Keeps your lap and your laptop cool. Plus, you can use your laptop on any soft surface, like a bed.
The hotter you computer runs, the shorter the life of the components. -

For mouse pad you can use the hand rest and disable the mousepad. Works well for casual gaming.
I remember I've finished Mass Effect 1 while having the laptop 90% of the time on my lap. -
If you want to have it on your lap get the new asus g73-jh instead of thinking what pose you have to keep so you dont block the fan intakes..
That one actually sucks air in from the keyboard, so you wont block any fans if you have it on your lap and it is cooler and quiter than most other gaming notebooks now.
Just a suggestion.. -
I use one of these...
I bought the above lap desk for when I just want to poke around on the internet. It's large enough to fit a 17" laptop.
I haven't tried gaming with it yet, but if I did I'd have to throw a mouse pad next to me on the sofa and use the mouse that way. -

Can you say, " Testicular Cancer " ?
Yahoo! Canada Answers - Can laptops cause testicular cancer? Please give sources with information from sites that aren't all .com?
"There isn't enough evidence to say yes or no. However, I would say it's unlikely. No source, just personal experience--I have been a healthcare education teaching assistant since 1979. Most physicians will tell you "the exact causes of testicular cancer aren't really known."
However, laptops can raise scrotal temperature, decreasing sperm production. Testicles are outside the body for a reason--to keep them cooler than the body. This lower temperature is essential for sperm production and survival."
Get a lapdesk or a piece of plywood and set a notebook cooler on top of that !
Can I use the NP8690/W860CU on my lap for gaming?
