I may or may not put an order through for the M860TU in the coming months depending on my student loans, cash flow etc... to be blunt, I just want a 256bit gpu & an Intel core 2 duo processor in a 15.4" notebook.

Can I go with ddr2 instead of ddr3? (does the motherboard support it) and then worry about upgrading the memory (if necessary) over the next 3/4 years? :) I think ddr3 memory is too pricey for my needs, I am not impressed with the performance/price.... its RAM.

    nope.

DDR2 and DDR3 are not compatible modules.

if you want to save money, I would get 2GB of DDR3, its plenty especially if you are using XP.
    - if you are using Vista, then you may just need to disable resource hogs.

then by year's end, the prices should get better.

Some of these vendors are charging +$120USD for 2 GB...

    NCIX has 2GB for $90cad...

    or, 4gb for $214 (which doesn't make any sense what-so-ever  )

2GB DDR3 is fine in Vista.

    I am running 2GB DDR1 for over 2 years now, I run:
    - XP Pro SP2 (32-bit)
    - Vista 32-bit and 64-bit (in VMware)
    - Ubuntu

Yeah, I'm on Vista Home with 1GB ddr2, runs the staple programs fine.

Pissed off between the disparity of pricing between 128bit 15.4" notebooks & the M860TU/M15X (256bit).

If I was an exec for one of these companies I'd be working on another $1200-$1400USD 9800M GTS replica of those gateways in 15.4" form pronto.

You could look for a notebook with a powerful 128-bit GPU, such as the ASUS G50...

    ... no thanks.

I won't touch 128-bit gpu's (my old ATI X1950GT outpreforms them, it cost me $129.99CAD). To be honest, if I wasn't going to school far from home I'd get a big beefy desktop.

256bit gpu is a minimum with me.

    About $80 (newegg).

Just make sure your 1 stick of 2 gigs of ram is actually ONE STICK. I have two sticks of 1 gig each, despite requesting 1 stick :/ Bleh.

I requested 1 stick.. what's the easiest way to check if you have 1 or 2?

As a side note.. How important is it that both sticks are for the same amount of ram. I remember reading somewhere that intel systems can handle using two different sized ram modules, but AMD can't. I know my PC runs two different sized and has never had a problem, it's an Intel processor.

I was ready and able to purchase one a month ago but Toshiba doesn't think Canadian consumers are technologically advanced enough to handle the f55 so it's not available, and we cannot order it from the U.S, even with Canadian credit cards. Either that, or BestBuy USA got a very exclusive deal.

To check if you have 1 stick of ram or 2, download cpuz, go to the spd tab and click on slot1 and slot2 in the dropdown box and see what it says is in each
