I was trying to install ubuntu to a usb stick so I could always have linux with my but I've run into a little problem. Whenever I boot the system witht he usb key inserted, it just goes straight to the boot loader for my regular hdd install.
I thought that I may have to upgrade to a newer BIOS version, but after following the guide to do so by zfactor, I can't even boot into the DOS disk to update my bios!
Any suggestions? Booting via cd works and none of the usb ports are faulty to my knowledge. There is no usb option under boot in the BIOS either.
I also tried removing the hard drive and booting with just the usb key in there... that didn't work and now there's a "media test failure, check cable" warning every time I boot (however I can still boot to hdd).

I also tried after disabling AHCI for whatever that is worth, it made no difference.

Which BIOS ver are you using?

Version 1.10

Has anyone else had this problem? Booting via CD works perfectly but USB drive wont even show up on the menu when I press F12 during boot.

Very strange. Maybe try setting FDD to be the first boot device. Also make sure the USB drive is inserted before you turn the notebook on (it sounds like you are, but it was worth mentioning.)

I am running BIOS Ver. 1.15 on my FL90.
danny2001 was correct "make sure the USB drive is inserted before you turn the notebook on ". The USB drive will show up as a HDD in the BIOS, and in the Boot Menu. Please see attached pics.
I was able to create a Linux flash drive, and it works fine.
As for the error "media test failure, check cable" your laptop is trying to boot from the LAN before the HDD.Attached Files:
