imo get the gigabyte its based on the atheros chipset.. the intel is broadcomm. the atheros chipsets blow the intel ones away.. i have removed my intel 49 series n card and replaced it with a gigabyte atheros based card and WOW its a huge difference

every person i spoke with at intel when i had connection issues told me their card was based on the broadcomm chipset.. i spoke with many techs to get it working right and i asked each one to see if they would give me a different answer, so not sure i guess but thats what i was told from intel.

either way THE ATHEROS BLOWS THE INTEL AWAY. no contest. i have had both in that same laptop..

Ha, I see I completely read this wrong and made a fool of myself. Kudos to me.

As far as wifi cards, I disagree somewhat with zfactor. The intel cards tend to work as well as any other.

I had realy good lucky with intel card 3495

    also the broadcom chipset one

It also depend on what router you connecting to the chipset

You can match wireless card chipset to the router some time not bad idea

I've gotta side with Zfactor on this one. Originally when I started looking into a new laptop I had bought a vostro 1500 and it had the intel 3495 and all I can say is it certainly wasn't the greatest. When I had my t61p with a atheros a/b/g/n It was probably the best part about the laptop. Was considerably better than the intel model.

The important things to know if that Wifi N is still draft and usually chipsets are not compatible between them. If you mix for example a broadcomm card with an atheros router, they will probably fall back at 54mbps.

Make sure you look on intel for supported routers. I bouht a dlink extreme N which is reported one of the best N routers and though my dlink card is fast at 300mbps, the intel will connect at 130mbps. When I had a linksys router the intel max speed was 54mbps.

Just make sure the gigabyte card will support the router and vice-versa.

It really depends on how you are using your system. If your are planning on building your home network either works well as long as you buy compatible components. The Intel 4965 works well for me and has decent drivers for the OS's that I use. I think for more open compatibility the Gigabyte would be better when traveling. It has well supported drivers for many different OS's.
