    I have a P170HM with 6970M graphics card, 14.4 Catalyst version.

When I try and go into projector mode to disable the laptop screen, it works for ~30 seconds then turns off the external screen. This happens connected via HDMI or DVI.

Seems like the laptop is cutting the power to the port?

This is using AMD CCC or Windows Control Panel Screen options.

Isn't the hotkey FN + F7? I think FN + F1 is to toggle the touchpad on or off.

You could try playing with the power settings as a work around (particularly closing the lid behaviour).
