Hi guys, I was hoping someone could help me with a couple questions I have on Clevo's...

1.) I'm in Canada, so where would be a good place to get the Sager NP5791 (M570RU) I've checked Eurocom but their price is waayy to high.

2.)I've checked Xoticpc, and their prices are great, but I'm not sure what the price would end up being due to international borders, taxes, duties etc. Have any Canadian's ordered through Xoticpc? and if so, how much extra did you end up paying for duties, customs, etc?

Just for reference, the Eurocom computer was $2990 CAN, while at Xoticpc, I chose pretty much the same configuration and it was only about $2450 US.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

    Hey TheScreamingPlacebo:
I ran into a similar issue and was given the name of a Canadian company in Montreal AET solutions who deal with Sagers here north of the border. It's funny you should post this on the eve of me making my purchase LOL. I just ordered my Sager today.

Anyways you can find them online at http://www.aetsolutions.ca
or via the old telephone at 514-956-0688. The chap I have been dealing with name's is Tristan. Very helpful fellow.

So far dealing with Tristan and AET has been 100% first rate.

My new baby to come (the NP5791) has the 1680X1050 resolution, 17" monitor, 512 meg 7950 GT video, 160 gig hard drive @ 7200 rpm, with of course all the standard Sager features..

T minus a week or so till delivery I am told.

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers,
    Jeremy

    Hey thescreamingplacebo

I forget one spec hehheh I am going for the 2.2 7500 santa rosa. :D

I am pretty excited about it. LOL its taken me awhile to finally pick one. I have been all over the map. But feature for feature the Sager models couldn't be beat for quality and value. At least thats what my research has told me.

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

Hmm, well I'm from BC, so I'll be paying for GST and PST which will add probably an extra $300-$400 on top of the price...hurray...
Does anybody know when I'll pay that if I order from Xoticpc? Like, will I pay the customs fees, the gst/pst and whatnot when I pick up the laptop from the post office?

I went Eurocom, because after the duty charge and PST/GST, it wasnt cheaper getting it from Sager, it was about the same price. But atleast I can physically drive to Eurocom... rather than UPS'ing it back to California if it has problems.

well, customs depends on the shipping method you used, i have heard. I went with USPS because there should be no customs charges at all, and USPS makes sure of this.

GST+PST may or may not be tacked on, some people have apparently avoided this.

But, for example, with the GST rate at 6% and the PST at 7%, here in BC, i should only pay $175 tax in total, on my laptop order which was $1350 canadian (and that price includes the shipping charges as well!)

I'd bet the difference that you'll see a COD charge for border handling... YOu can't escape it, and the only way to escape it with FedEX/UPS etc is to pay them ahead of time for it. Virtually nothing aside from personal gifts, and personal remains crosses the border without a duty- its Canadian law. Sometimes the seller picks up the cost, sometimes they dont and you are on your own.

Let us know, wouldnt surprise me if it costs you an extra 60-80 bucks though.

    Here ya go:

    http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/courier/postal/ind_duty_free-e.html

And no- you dont count as a PO, unfortunately heh.

UPS does offer free duty, on their more expensive services (hence its partially rolled into the price).

    http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/sh...s_clearance.html?srch_pos=1&srch_phr=duty fee

I am not sure what USPS offers though, I wasnt aware they offered a similar program, being strickly a mail carrier, who will transfer the package to Canada Post rather than deliver direct.

    Hey Guys

Yeah the deal with tax is simple I think. You pay the PST and GST only in the province where its bought. So there is no PST in Quebec where I bought mine so I am only paying the GST tax. I believe BC is the same? At least when I order from NCIX out west I don't pay any PST so I am assuming thats the case.

Duty charges very from place to place I am finding. I have heard that shipping with USPS includes set duty fees but I can't veryify one way or another. I have come across a brokerage fee as well in my travels on this, which is something different than a duty fee I am told? It would be nice to know the difference and get the facts about this issue. Anyone know?

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

As I understand it, there is no duty form US to Canada for laptops (didn't research why.) On my order, it was true - no duty.

I did get hit with PST + GST though, as COD charge from the border. Very nasty.

(In the end, the notebook still whips a Macbook Pro that costs $3100CDN; including shipping for the Sager and no shipping for the MBP, you get a second mouse button, better performance, and save $500 :p)

Originally I had my mind set on a mac. I honestly thought they were more price competitive then they were. By the time you config the machine with that damn apple care you are well and I mean well over the $3k mark without having it shipped or paying the tax. Its pretty scary actually.

I looked at alot of models. Dells, toshibas, Macs, Thinkpads, each had their own pros and cons. In the end the Sager was simply too good a deal. I didn't have to settle on components and was able to spec the exact machine I wanted within the price range I wanted. So now the shopping is over LOL, and the waiting begins.

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

For me the wait wasn't too long; 4 days. Well, it _Felt_ long since I worried over the build quality, keyboard feel etc.. the things youl couldn't know about for a net order. But all is fantrastic, and the anticipation is good :)

    got mine!
I ordered from xoticpc.com using UPS express and still got hit by GST and PST (I live in BC... where PST > GST... T_T )
the good thing is... I didn't get hit by brokerage fee and duty (no duties for electronics manufactured in north america acording to NAFTA agreement).
still reformatting this baby and installing XP later on XD
