I noticed just now that I cannot adjust the brightness of my laptop's screen with Fn+F8/F9. I have 185.62 NVIDIA driver installed and the Hotkey software from Sager. When I press the hotkeys all it does is show the brightness icon in the upper left corner of the screen and the bar is stuck in the middle. The brightness bar also doesn't show when I left click the battery icon in the taskbar. I reckon with my old Clevo W860CU that this happends when the NVIDIA driver is not yet installed but in this particular instance I have it installed. What did I do wrong here?

so when you right click on the battery on the task bar what pops up?
it should show adjust screen brightness, power options, windows mobile centre and turn system icons on or off.

try control panel > power options > personalization > display.

I had the same problem when I had a certain beta drivers which for some reason did not include the option to change brightness with shortcut. It might help if install 290.39 which I have installed and the brightness adjustment will change with shortcut.

It only shows power options, windows mobile centre and turn system icons on or off.

No adjust brightness in control panel > power options > personalization > display also.

    Two things to try:

    1) Clean reinstall the Nvidia drivers
    2) Reinstall your hotkey drivers

See if those two steps help sort it out, before trying another Nvidia driver revision (like Beta).

why are you using an older driver? im using the latest whql driver 285.62 and no problems, try that and if it works then the driver is the issue.

Oops, I'm sorry I meant 285.62. Do you have the brightness control with those drivers?

I've just tried reinstalling NVIDIA Driver 285.62 and Hotkey software from Sager and I can't still adjust brightness. What else can I do?

Could be a registry issue if there is no brightness bar in the PowerCenter

A fresh Windows install is a good last step option. It may even save you time versus continuing to troubleshoot if you haven't added much to the machine yet.

Ok, I will try that then. It's weird since this is almost a fresh install of a new system.

Yes I agree on doing the fresh install. Especially so if it from day one you had this issue.

Unfortunately even with a BRAND NEW install of Windows things might not all be in sync... as it were.

Yes I know it is a time consuming pain to this... :(

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but a solution wasn't given for this issue
After a while searching I found that it could be caused by an issue with teamviewer

    Go to extras->options->advanced->advanced network settings
and uninstall the monitor driver, this fixed it for me

Sorry about not updating the thread but you are correct about Teamviewer's monitor driver causing this issue. I've solved this issue a long time ago already.
