    Hello everyone,

Does anyone have inverters that runs from their car cigarette port? My car's cigarette ports are rated 12V and 10Amps, so theoretically up to 120 watts of power. Would it be a good idea to charge laptops like the P650SG? I know it's a 180 watt brick, but I don't think it uses more than 100 watts of power while charging on idle mode. Would it work? Thanks.

Yes, as long as you are using it only for charging it won't need 180W so you should be fine.

You can get converters that will do 180W of continuous power output, and that should work with no problems. A lot of those adapters may say something like "300w power adapter" but only be talking about the peak power it can do, which is just short bursts of power. You want to find one that has a high enough continuous usage, if you want to try to run the computer at the same time. But otherwise, if you have a lower powered one, you should be fine to just charge the computer as you mentioned.

His socket is only rated for 10 amps at 12v so i would not plug anything in rated above that charger wise.

To add one more opinion into the mix. Yes you will be fine for charging and even just surfing I would bet.

If you tried to startup a game or something very demanding you will go over the 120w. That would just run down the laptop battery I would think, also it could trip a breaker/fuse in the car and then you are for sure on battery at that point.

i have one that is a continuous 300 watts with a peak of 650watts. keep in mind though that which ever one your buy that you will have to route cable directly to your battery in order to get that wattage out of it. from the 12v cig/acc socket i cant go over i think it was 120 watts and getting close to that wattage will burn the fuse for the socket.

That's what car insurances are for. :D

Jokes aside, I should think about hard wiring to the battery if I need more power than the cigarette port can provide.

Yes, you definitely want to go straight to the battery. Using the cigarette lighter socket is OK for low power devices, but not more than that.

Hardwire one of these bad boys straight to your battery like a huge stereo amp and you'll be set. This (or the equivalent) is what some insurance companies use in the mobile claim vehicles to run power-chugging stuff like laser printers along with their laptops.

This will run vacuum cleaners and blenders, so you can help with the chores around the house and enjoy a cold margarita when you're done.
