Will the np9150 recognize my external dvd drive for a clean install of windows 7? The drive is an hp model dvd556s. I can't find any of my usb drives to boot from or I would, so if I can I'd rather just use the windows cd.

Yes it should. But I think it's far easier to create a USB boot drive and just place a Windows 7 image on that. You can download official Windows 7 ISO's directly, though you'll still need your CD-Key to use it.

Not that it matters much, but installing from USB is much much faster than installing from DVD.

hmm, I don't know if clean install was the right wording. The np9150 won't have an OS on it is what I meant, blank slate. So I wasn't sure if it would recognize the external dvd because it has no drivers yet. Will it still recognize it is the windows boot cd in that drive?

You don't need drivers for external, it should work fine, if it doesn't, you'll know. If it shows up in the Bios you'll be fine. You need to let it know to boot from the external for it to work, just as you would need to let it know to boot from USB if you were to use that method. USB is the best way to go.
