Does everyone here actually open up their computers to clean out their vents? I'm very wary of going so far as to unscrew parts of my laptop to clean it out. It seems like that shouldn't be necessary, or is poor design. I feel like if I open up the laptop I'll accidentally cause more damage than I'll fix. Is blowing compressed through the vents in the back enough? What do you guys do?

it is very very easy to do it.

I even detailed it at the end of the Clevo Guide.

you do not need to do much except compressed air, some Q-tips, and 10 minutes.

it is something simple to do, and doesnt take a lot of time.

it most definitely is not due to a bad design. every computer gets dusty. there is nothing wrong with maintenance. if you do not want to clean your laptops vents, then find one without any vents. when you find one of those, then you dont have to clean them out.

    ;)

Agreed. Doing routine maintenance on a laptop is quick and simple.

Oshiruko. Be very careful when you clean your laptop of dust. Blowing compressed air into the exhaust vents will only push dust back inside.

I have a friend that asked me to clean out the inside of his HP Dv5. He tells me that he cleans out his vents by shooting air into it, and yet the system still overheats. I opened the entire chassis and to my amazement, I find dust, carpet fibers, and other sh*t caked up in the heatsink grill and lodged in the fan motor. Before I cleaned it out, his Turion X2 and Geforce 7150, both sharing the same heatsink, would hit 95*C and then shut down within minutes of playing Megami Tensei Online. After cleaning out his entire chassis, replacing a few thermal pads, applying AS Ceramique, and undervolting the CPU, the maximum temperature achieved while playing that game was 53*C, a difference of over 40*C. An hour and a half spent cleaning out his laptop earned me a cool $30 and a Subway that day.

In short, clean your computer properly on a routine basis. If this is done, then nobody will have to go through the hell of trying to save an abused notebook. Machines deserve the love, respect, and care that living beings enjoy as well.

You'd be amazed how much dust accumulates even after a couple of months!
I wonder if we could install dust filters in there.... :radar:

Definitely take a peek under the laptop and make sure the vents underneath are clear. I notice dust on those and that hints me to what the internals will be like.

I wonder if it might be prudent to just keep a few screws in on the bottom cover and not all, because I feel if I had to keep unscrewing (12?) screws often then, I might wear them out.

if you do it every few months, and you dont torque the screws down, then you should not worry about stripping the screws.
