I was scanning different sites, for who is listing the 6990M, and I was shocked to see Prostar basically giving away the rest of their 6970M inventory. I guess the 6990M is really close to release.

I figured it should be brought to the attention of those who are currently shopping for a machine.

    P150HM

    P170HM

    Cheers

Nice heads up. Also noticed they offer the 95% glossy screen as a $35 upgrade (most others offer it at $95). Their price on the 95% matte is $95.

Depends on the buyer really at this point. The 6970 at that price point is a great pick-up, especially when you consider the max difference between the 6990 and 6970 will be 20% (Unlikely), but more likely to match the difference between the 485m to the 580m.

I don't know if you've been following the thread in the Alienware section or not, Cheesy, but you might want to check out:

I know you have been eying it up for a bit so that might help you out.

    Try contacting babyhemi at LPC-digital,

He offers extremely good prices for any configuration. I did inquire others when I purchased mine, but all-in-all, babyhemi gave the cheapest configuration price.

He also sells all components, too. so try contacting him at

    larry at LPC-digital dot com.

I would choose the $60 6970M, every time.

The 6990M's ~15% advantage is not worth $185.

I bought my latest machine from a Sager dealer, but my previous machine came from Prostar, and I've had friends buy there as well.

They're a legit and large operation. The customer service embarrasses Sager's, I must say.

Thanks for the input you guys, I'm seriously considering buying the P170HM - PS1 from Prostar (what's with the PS1?)

I've been hunting for a decent gaming laptop for a while. I initially considered getting a 17" Asus with the 460m, but seeing how I would be spending $1100+ for a 460m while I could get a high range gaming laptop for $1300+, I reconsidered. Plus I hear a lot of good things about the build quality of Clevo laptops.

So I pretty much kept the base configuration for the P170HM - PS1, except for:

The 6970m and intel 6230 wifi upgrade, and the DVD writer downgrade (I really don't think I'll need a blu-ray 4x drive for $20)

...and it comes out to $1381.28 cash. So you guys think this is a phenomenal deal?

I'm very tempted to call Prostar later today to make my order. I don't suppose you guys have an email coupon from them you'd like to share?

    Thanks again.

Less than $1.4k for a 2630QM + 6970M is pretty insane. I'd jump on it ASAP!

The site says that VIPs (past customer) can share codes with friends, so I think I can save you some money. I'll PM you my info.

I've been planning on waiting for the 6990m but this is pretty tempting.
Anyone ever deal with Prostar for warranty issues and the like? Are they comparable to other Sager resellers?

    Thanks!

Code sent. If anyone else wants it, send me a PM. It's good for $35 off an order over $1k, and $50 off an order over $2k.

Thanks so much Kevin_Jack, +1 to you!

However, I've been looking around some more at forums, and noticed that some people (not many) have had issues with the 6970. And I guess it makes sense, ATI has always been the cheaper brand compared to Nvidia. So I guess it makes sense that ATI has worse drivers, and maybe slightly higher failure rates?

Also with the 6990 coming soon, which like you said isn't worth the extra money for the ~15% increase in performance, isn't the 485m likely to come down in cost? If it does and the 485m is just slightly more expensive than the 6970 is currently, maybe I should wait until the 6990 to come out and get the 485?

Yes, you may save $185 with the 6970m but your also less future proof. Doesn't make sense not to spent that extra money and be able to run some games on ultra at a more smooth fps. 35fps vs 30fps on games like Crysis 2 on Ultra setting make a huge differences, unless you rather game at 720p, which still look good.

Edit: Just realize Prostar is in CALIFORNIA so they charge TAXES.

Come on, 15% is not more future proof, and is never worth nearly $200.

    Nothing is future-proof.

I would also take the 6970m if the price difference was $185.

That for a small gain is not worth it.

Yes mate, but it was between the 485m and 6990m, not the 6970m. 485m was minimal for me, I didn't even consider the 6970m especially when it was pull out before I decided to buy a notebook.

I figured they would sell through pretty quickly at that price.

I hope you guys did decide to buy earlier today.

Yes, I agree $60 for amd 6970 is a great buy as long as the card does not have issue and u r not a hardcore gamer. (Hardcore games always want to best, they want to squeeze out every fps, arrr... Cheesy, don't look at me, I am not talking about you. :p)

I think this card does not have problem, because I check with a few user using 6970 crossfire, they said good temperature, smooth game. I think its sager suppy problem causing this card unavailable to user.

And the main problem now is Sager don't have this amd 6970 card option anymore. I never knew Sager is just like those hyper super market, bring in certain goods, once gone, that's it, never importing again. I should have bought it the other day, but I hesitate, worry it is the returned good of other buyer.

Now, our option is hope, hope that amd 6990 will arrived soon and cheap, on the hand, will push gtx 485 and 580 to a lower more reasonable price range. Then we can start thinking again which card should I pick, Nvidia or AMD. LOL

    good luck guys.
