    Hi All,

Yesterday while playing crysis on my widowpc sting 517m I smelled the smell of burnt plastic. Checking the back of my laptop, I saw that the powerjack that goes into the back of the laptop was melting??

I have uploaded three pictures which clearly show what happened:

Obviously this is worrying, and hence 1) what could be the cause of this 2) what7 can be done about it. (Keeping in mind that www.widowpc.com seems to have gone out of business, as they don't reply at all to messages?)

Thanks for any and all help!

Damn... I have never seen anything like that... musta been crazy hot.

I would assume, maybe the heat from your fans was blowing on it and melted it... or it was a bad power jack? I dont know if they went outa business... Im not sure Sager/Clevo will support it..

I don't think WidowPC is out of business.

For those who are interested, the support guy got back to me fast, which is nice, though in the end the substance of the message is less nice

"The repair cost is difficult to estimate. I have seen melted power jacks that can be simply removed and re-soldered while other melted power jacks needed to have the motherboard replaced to bring functionality back to the notebook. We would only know for sure after a tech opens up the notebook and evaluates it. We do not ship internationally at this time. [I'm in Europe right now, not in the US for a while] Shipping to you in [;) where I am ] would be impossible. I see that you purchased on xxx. You should weigh the repair time/cost vs. investing in a new notebook. Repairs are generally costly and time consuming. Taking anywhere from 3-4 weeks right now. To send the notebook in would costs a minimum $85 diagnostic fee and then you will be quoted for repair costs after evaluation. Let me know if I can help you or you have any further questions. I realize you are in a difficult situation with your notebook right now."

So no international shipping, and expensive repair. Though on a more general note I find it odd that a 3700USD piece of hardware melts for the 2nd time! (first time it was a fried mother board after half a year while it was still under warranty, now the power jack)

The worst thing that could happen is for you to pay for a new motherboard. Ask RJ Tech for a pricing on the motherboard (if it isn't still under warranty, because if it is you can easily force them to repair it for you) and see what's what.

Yes, talk to [email protected] - explain your situation and show him those pics. I'm doing a similar repair with them right now, although my jack isn't melted (just removed from the board) and they quoted me $200 +shipping both ways as a rough estimate.

    Good luck!
