    Hello,

    I have not frequented this forum since I received my 901 back in February.

    I love this rig.

    Last night I was working with one of my 3d apps and it froze. I mean froze.

    It would not respond to a Ctrl-Alt-Del. It would not respond to the power button.

    I usually run off of AC so I unplugged everything, but of course the battery was at full charge. So I could either let it run until the battery died or do what I did and remove the battery. Wasn’t very fond of this idea but the system wasn’t responding.

    The system restarted fine and appears to have suffered no ill effects. Does anyone have any insight into what may have happened. Can an overheated CPU cause this type of lockup? I ask because we have had some consecutive hot days at 32 plus deg centigrade and we all know that the quad runs warm in this lappy. I should mention that I am running it on a Zalman 2000 cooler.

    Can you run this laptop on AC without the battery installed?

    Again if anyone can shine some light on this glitch, I would appreciate the response.

    Regards, James.

    coolers are a waste. this rig is already elevated in the rear by design so it cools just fine. you can run max fans if you are worried at all.

    everyone experiences a hard system freeze every once in a while where nothing is responsive. you can simply press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds until the laptop shuts off and the restart it instead of unplugging it from ac and removing battery.

    i would not worry. if it was a result from cpu overheat the system would shut off instantly instead of freeze up.

    Hey guys thanks for the responses. Makes me feel better. Like I said this laptop has been a performer and I cant afford to have much downtime with it.

    Regards, James.

    @MobileCADMan:

    Check your event logs to see what caused the freeze - there should be something in there. From the way you describe it, it sounds more like a driver quit doing what it was supposed to do, or something else with very high execution priority got stuck in a deadlock or an infinite loop.
