Hey Guys,
I was just browsing on Youtube when I found this video, showing the Clevo stand at Computex 2011. In the clip, you can clearly see that the P150HM and the P170HM3 on the stand were outfitted with back-lit keyboards!
Let's just hope these are not just prototypes...
-
Damn, that's nice, I'm guessing no go for owners to switch existing keyboards to the backlit ones ?
Btw, the asian guy at the beginning looked like he ate something bad or or was scared or soemthing, his look on his face on beginning of the video woke meup better tha my coffee in front of me
-
That looks pretty sweet!
Nice to know you can get your wedding picture on the cover of the notebook as well! -
Haha the guy had the "deer in headlights" look. Backlit keyboard does not look easily upgradable from the current kb though, being chiclet styled.
-
Awesome....that terrified look on "Kyle's" face is pure awesome.
-
I think his look is more news than the keyboard itself
-
Posting this here as well.
I personally attended Computex at the Clevo display. When talking to the counter-parts there, they informed me that this backlit keyboard is not going to be released for the Sandy Bridge, only for Ivy bridge next year. It is strictly for display purpose and is an engineering sample. Sorry to dissapoint but it is not backwards compatible.
Secondly MOFA is not supported on the gaming series P models. -
Are you serious? Wow, no backlit for another 10 months? But i remember one of the reseller mentioned Clevo wpuld implement such KB's either by the end of the summer or the end of the year... hope for the best. May be somebody from xoticpc or malibal can give us a hint) The lighting adds more gaming feel to the laptop, BTW!
-
My info is the same as the above
sorry guys -
Jack is from LogicalBlueOne. If he said it, it's true.
-
Thanks for clearing that up.
+ Rep -
Now time to imitate Kevin_Jack2.0's profile picture! Joking!!!
-
The one feature I really wish the clevos had, shame it is still awhile off

Since it's the same basic chassis, I'm guessing it will be backwards compatible and we could probably buy the keyboards separately ourselves.
-
But the poster from Logical Blue One said that it won't be backward-compatible
. Dang, this was one upgrade I really wanted to do to my laptop, too!
-
when is ivy bridge out for notebooks anyway? Early 2012 or what??
-
Wouldnt it be awesome if the current versions could be upgraded to the backlit keyboard! Now I'm sort of sad I recently purchased the NP8130 but I needed a new computer regardless, and waiting until Q2'12 for the Ivy Bridge version to come out would have been a dreadful and exhausting wait.
-
I'd think the backlit keyboard would need to be powered somehow; which would require a different connection than the current P150HM's keyboard.
-
They should just offer it now and charge for it. Make it another upgrade, makes them some money and those of us idiots like me would spend more for it becuase its so sexy lol
The fact they have it on one now means they had a design that worked, they just didnt want to introduce it so late in the game as other owners would be upset about it. Bahh -
Bummer that lighted keyboards dont arrive until Ivy Bridge. Hopefully, they put a put enough power on the KB ribbon cable so we can UPGRADE our keyboards! I would easily pay $100-150 for a lighted KB.
-
best interview face ever
-
Thank you Clevo for finally stepping up and adding back-lit keyboards! That's one of the most popular requests we get.
-
Some more information.
The reason it won't work is because of 2 things. You will require more power and there is not a keyboard power connector on the motherboard. Sure OK you might be able to mod that I thought.
Secondly the keyboard is about 3mm taller than the standard and about 1.5mm wider, it does not fit in the standard keyboard placement.
So this is why they are waiting till Ivy Bridge, as they will have to redesign all of this anyway. The one they have here is just an engineering sample and is one off job to see if interest from their partners to support this keyboard. Sorry to be a downer. -

I guess I'll be selling my laptop within 8 months then. Backlit and Ivy Bridge should be worth it. -
disappointed......i like older one(m570tu/d900f type keboard)
-
so the p1x0hm displayed there are same chassis as now or they already are redesigned chassis!?
-
Redesigned, just a beta sample. Not in any way has it been officially designed. Just more of a 'can we do it?' scenario.

I've just read about Intel's Tick-Tock model and their future road map. Is there a "best" time to upgrade to the next Intel processor, in other words, should a person upgrade at Tick or Tock... and why?
-
Ah. The D900F had a beautiful keyboard. I love it. So very much.

there's good arguments for both. intel generally makes good quality product and engineering. some people will point to the sandy bridge recall and say what about that? but how many times can you say that about intel or it's other products? now me personally, i don't think ivy will be that big an upgrade over sandy bridge. intel marketing or no. i think the next generation "might" be, and by then back lit keyboards from clevo will be second generation too, albeit back lit keyboards have been around a while so it is an established second generation feature.
-
The back-lit keyboards look so sexy
I want it now
-
ivy will be a big jump because Intel's new process is the equivalent of jumping to SOI. It's not just a process shrink. That being said, Intel may keep all the gains for power saving.
-
all i've seen is marketing centering more around 3d transistors. i don't think we'll see big gains in power or performance. i think haswell will be a bigger jump from ivy than ivy will be from sandy. but i could be wrong. who knows? i'd really like to nvidia and amd bring some powerhouse gpu's that consume low power. it'd be awesome to play a game or do some serious distributed networking for ~30 watts an hour. right now doing so on my system in my sig is about ~60+ watts an hour. i have to manage it to keep it at 30 watts.
-
the tocks should give you more technology and a greater jump in performance since it is a new architecture all together. the ticks are die shrinks with the usual performance and/or energy-saving features.
ticks are a refinement of the tocks, but historically you see more gains when architecture is changed. -
Can somebody make a gif of the rep? He's hilarious.
-
The rep said the P15X supports cpu and gpu overclock. Is that confirmed? The gpu is easy throught various softwares but and what about the cpu?! Maybe with the i7 2920xm? Overclock throught bios or software like throttlestop?
-
This might finally get me to take the leap from Alienware...
-
You haven't made the leap from Alienware yet? If backlit keyboards (and not the $500 price savings) are what's stopping you, you may be beyond help. Or just very freaking rich.
-
Seeing that this is only for the next revision of Clevo hardware makes me sad. D;
But not that much, as i just ordered myself some backlit mechanical goodness.
(Hint: Qpad MK-80) -
I wish this was 'Coming Soon', so I could hold off on my RMA, to get the backlight tech while it's sent away for replacement.
-
Could anyone confirm it?
-
I'm wondering if the clevo backlit keyboard will be like the Asus one, i.e. one fixed colour only, or like AW where you can change the mono-colours or mulit-colours at will.
-
One step at a time, mate. First, let's get a nice white backlighting. Then we can worry about coloring the light, to suit your needs, after we have all of those that want backlighting satisfied.
-

This is a Clevo. It's a serious laptop. Not an Alienware Christmas Lights Uber Gamer Smorgasborg. It should only have one color, either blue or white. -
The light filters through the edge of the keys. Must be a better solution
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
On a notebook keyboard with the little space they have to work with, this is just about the best solution with current technology. Almost all backlit notebook keys are this way.
The most important thing is that they get the coating right because any slight wear on a backlit key will look horrible since the underlying key is transparent.
Look at this horrible mess on a backlit Macbook:
-
Lol...no, I want it all. Rather than wait until Ivy Bridge next year for a one backlight colour, and then another year for a choice of two etc., just go all out, queen takes queen, check mate.
Sure, but it would be nice to have a choice of colours. For those that just want a white backlight they can just keep it that colour, while the psychedelics play
-
I would want blue, if there's no option to choose.
-
I'd probably go with blue, but white would also be fine.
