    Hello there,

I'm having an issue with a laptop I just bought. I bought it for gaming, even though I do know PC's are the better option.

The thing is, the system overheats rather quickly. The screen will lock up into static when it over heats. The first few times this happened, I wasn't sure what the problem might be until I installed CPUID Hardware Monitor

I started seeing that my system when running a game, the CPU and GPU tempatures hitting 70-80 and above temps. I'm not sure how high the laptop actually gets, since around the 80's the system just locks up

I looked online for ways to cool my system, altering the Fan speed seemed to be a popular choice, But I'm unable to alter my fan speed in anyway. I have Clevo Co W150HRM motherboard, where the BIOS is intentionally limited, about the only options I have through the BIOS is to choose my boot order.

Any applications I've tried to use to change settings on my fan, were unable to recognize a fan. Speedfan, Rivatuner, Nhancer, and a few others

So I went out and bought a laptop cooling pad, with Three adjustable fans
Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Notebook Cooler Model NotePal U3 R9-NBC-8PCK-GP

Unfortunately, It didn't help as much as I hoped. Maybe a 6-10 degree drop

With a house fan directed at the laptop, and the cooling pad running, while running a game, like The Old Republic Beta, I can get the computer to run at a steady 70c

With the house fan off, It runs at around 80c

I unfortunately can not return the laptop, the company I bought it from has a pretty harsh refund policy.

Any Ideas on how to run the laptop without breaking it?

I assume the best option is to underclock the system

    I'm running:

    Clevo Co W150HRM
    Windows 7 64 bit
    Intel Core i7 2720QM
With 8 gigs of DDR3 ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 2 Gig DDR3 Ram

The system idles, with nothing running, with the cooling pad around 35c
Watching a movie its around 40-50c

The moment I start running a game, 70c or higher

Any opinions and any help is greatly appreciated

If there was a way to enable my fan speeds through the bios, or any other program, I think it would really help my overheating issues. The fan only goes from what I assume is slow cool, to medium cooling, when the CPU/GPU hit around 55c, and high doesn't happen at all until right before the system locks up

Those are not terrible temps. I think you have another issue. When did you buy it? If, as you said, you just bought it, it should be under warranty. You would seem to have a hardware issue. I get 70-80ish temps when really pushing my lappys, both my Sager and my Asus, but they never lock up. I believe these can run in the 90's without issue while being pushed really hard, so locking up at 80ish is not overheating. MB maybe? Or bad Graphic card? You need to call and RMA.

Same with me, I've played with 90's CPU and 105 GPU without lockups here (don't ask, I almost never end up in that situation), so yours should not be that bad. Old Republic is a heat-inducing thing, as are games like Borderlands, but most people don't experience your temps. Also, fn + 1 = bump your fan speeds to max. You don't change it in the BIOS, it's change-able on the fly.

Anyway, your machine has an issue. It should NOT under any circumstances be doing that. If you could get it replaced, I'd suggest going with a P151HM1, with the GTX 560M and the same 2730QM or so. You might need to pay a little difference, but your CPU is a HUGE bottleneck atm, and you'd have less issues with the higher up machine. At the least though, you'd better get your stuff replaced.

    Try playing with lower settings

As others have pointed out, 70-80C is not overheating. This machine actually tends to average in the high 80's under load. I would only suspect overheating if you saw temps pushing 95C or higher.

It sounds like you have a hardware issue, be it with RAM, the screen, or something else entirely. I'd contact your retailer and ask about doing an RMA, as a new machine should not be doing that.
