I was looking at the P170SM and thinking of possible screen upgrades. What I found is this:
Note, the P170SM as well as other older models have a 40pin LCD connector, LVDS (2 ch, 6-bit).
AUO B173HW02 V1 - Antiglare, 300 cd/m2, 400:1 contrast, 72% NTSC (in production)
AUO B173HW01 V5 - Antiglare, 300 cd/m2, 400:1 contrast, 72% NTSC (in production)
LG LP173WF1-TLB5 - Antiglare, 300 cd/m2, 600:1 contrast, 72% NTSC (in production)
Chimei-Innolux N173HGE-L11 - Antiglare, 300 cd/m2, 650:1 contrast, 72% NTSC (in production)
16:10 (this is possible, but crazy, maybe someone that has a 3D printer can try and print a new LCD encloser)
LG LP171WU7 - TLB1 - 1920x1200 , Antiglare, 200 cd/m2, 400:1 contrast, 50% NTSC
LG LP171WU7 - TLD1 - 300 cd/m2, 600:1 contrast, can only be found with 50 pin connector
LG LP171WU6 - TLB2 - 1920x1200 , Antiglare, 275 cd/m2, 700:1 contrast 72% NTSC
Possible 120 Hz models (confirmed as non-working):
Innolux N173HHF-E11 (not sure if it will work)
LG LP173WF2-TPB3 (50 pin - eDP - won't work probably)
Samsung LTN173HT02 - Semi-glossy, 400 cd/m2, was used in previous generation Samsung gaming laptops NP700G7A (72% NTSC ?)
The most insane 17.3 inch screen I've seen on the market so far, except for the high resolution ones, is the Samsung one. But I can't find a part number for it. The Samsung screen is used in the NP700G7C. It has 400 nit, 3D and 72% NTSC and it's in production. Only place I could find one was here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-17-3-...Laptop_Screens_LCD_Panels&hash=item48581c9d35 - http://www.samsungdisplay.com/chn/product/pop_product05_10.html

The problem is I think 2ch LVDS simply does not have enough bandwidth for 120hz 1080p.
-
Viewing angle is more important than max brightness or contrast imo. Unless we are taking a huge difference in contrast.

The HM could with a different cable, the 170EM never shipped with a 120hz display due to optimus.
-
That still leaves the matter unresolved, since there is no reason why Optimus would prevent a 120 HZ screen from working. The idea is not to have a 3D laptop here, rather of having a laptop that supports 120 Hz refresh rate.
-
The IVB Intel iGPUs didn't support 120Hz IIRC.
-
But haswell does
-
So the Samsung one is a 3D 120Hz with 40pin ?
-
More important than that is what Meaker said. Does lvds have enough bandwidth?
Yes the samsung is 40 pin iirc -
If I get the chance, I will definitely get this screen and try it out. -
i am drooling!!!! Hahahaha i was looking for very long time to try one..
Hmmm bad is i am not in the UK anymore and importing anything over 30pound in Norway is subject to heavy tax(and subject to officers judgment) -
After some digging around you can either get one of the top 72% NTSC LCDs on my list (I think these are the standard panels now on the P170SM) or...
you can either get the
16:10 - LG LP171WU6 - TLB2 (crazy modding involved)
or the
120Hz - LTN173HT02 -
Hmmmm i am more on the idea of plug and play, not into modding
The samsung is only compatible with samsung laptops? -
The Samsung is supposedly 40-pin LVDS, so it should work.
For me, modding the case to accommodate a 16:10 screen would be amazing. The 16:9 screens are 2 cm wider and 1 cm shorter than 16:10. -
If it works:
Samsung LTN173HT02 - was used in previous generation Samsung gaming laptops NP700G7A (72% NTSC ?)
That's what I would choose. -
You can get them off eBay if you want. They are decently priced.
If it doesn't work you can always resell it. -
Besides the hz how does it compare to our stock chimei? Chimei has to much "sand" for my taste
-
Read the review of the screen here: Review Samsung Series 7 Gamer 700G7A Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
320 cd/m2 in average, 950:1 contrast ration, 120 Hz. -
Who is gonna test it? I'm on vacations now, and im almost clicking the buy button!
-

Lol, I'll be watching this. I wonder who the first vic.... I mean tester will be.

The 120hz panel yes.
-
Does anyone know it's power consumption?
-
So i have been doing a lot of research, and now i have serious doubts it will work, specially because there isn't a single optimus laptop with it. If there is a problem it will be haswell igpu imho. Im not sure if alienware has optimus with 120hz, but if it does we need to be sure if there isn't any hardware wiring bypassing the igpu. Meaker from the little know how i learned now i understand your thoughts.
-
What LCD screens does Alienware use? I theirs are a little bit special.
Also keep in mind that this 120 Hz screen has only been produced by Samsung and exclusively for Samsung gaming notebooks.
If I had the P170SM I would definitely try this screen, I can always resell if it doesn't work. -
I'm going to check that samsung lcd in a local store, and then... Who knows... Might give it a try. Meanwhile i will keep searching.
-
So i bought the samsung screen and as most expected it doesnt work.
I will keep the stock lcd for now. -
Interesting that it doesn;t work. I expected it to work at least in 60 Hz refresh rate.
Either way, then the best screens are the top 3 at the beginning og the page. -
Thanks. Please don't treat me as Sir, Nano is enough
I wanted it to work but unfortunately it didn't. From what i read in a review about the LG model i don't think it is the way to go either due to is "quality" (from what i read) but i will read more about the other ones. I need to thank you because you were the one who showed me the options and for that i owed you this one.

It will use different signalling much like how a dual LVDS screen wont display a 1366x768 image correctly on a single LVDS cable (still miss half the pixels).
