    Is this laptop backwards compatible with type 3 even though it has a type 4 mxm slot?
    what card should i buy? on a budget with wanting one that will last. reliability is probally my biggest concern.

    The 8700M GT, 8800M GTX, 9800M GT and 9800M GTS should be compatible with this model.

    You may also have to update your bios to the latest one for the 9800 series.

    I don't believe the newer 200M series works though.
